Hi all,
I’m new here and wanted to say hi.
I also have a question for you all. I was just watching some old
clips on my phone and Rob Lewis popped up. Now for the context-
I coach (in addition to the refereeing) and my u15 team went to
a national tournament last year and we got to the final and Rob
Lewis refereed it. It was a one day tournament in the north of
the country and there was group stages throughout the day and
the finals towards the end. They were 11 aside games but
shortened timings. There was quite a few officials wearing the
EFL badge but I didn’t recognise them. I did Rob Lewis.
Some parents took videos of the final (as one might expect) and
you can hear Rob Lewis say quite a few things such as when a
player moved the ball too far forward (trying to take the mick)
Rob shouted ‘stop giving it the biggen and move it back’
He also flashed around cards (3 cards in the final- all for the
opposing team, including dissent) and he refereed it in a way
like an EFL game with the style he adopted. That’s what it felt
like. I rather enjoyed it actually and he was very pleasant to
talk too and you could tell compared to other referees at the
tournament that he had been and was currently at a high level.
The question is- what’s everyone’s opinions on him? I found in a
way, he did give it back during the tournament to players. As
one might expect he har a good whistle and explained his
decisions well.

Rob Lewis tends to be one of the low key FL toilers who are
never going to hit the heights nor be too dreadful either. He
has been on the FL for a good number of years and is a solid
'bread and butter' referee. I've seen him live three times and
the most appropriate adjective is unremarkable. He kept control
adequately enough, refereed in a very safe fashion ( quite a lot
of whistle I remember) and was generally quite competent without
being noticeably good or bad.

One of the smallest referees on the EFL list, Rob always seems
to make up for his lack of height with a 'speedy-Gonzales' style
of running and an ability to always look interested in what is
going on, however dire the proceedings. Injury prone in the
past, Rob seems to have found a good physio in recent times,
although I note he was replaced on Boxing Day for the game at
Exeter. Injuries and other factors allowing, Rob would be my
nomination for the Papa John's Trophy Final this year.

I've only "met" Rob once - when I ran the line to him on a West
Midlands League game at Brintons Chainwire (in Kidderminster)
back in the early 2000s.
Found him to be amiable and controlled the game well.

I agree. I'm not sure who doles out the Papa John's ( among its
many iterations ) Trophy Final now ( Mike Jones ? ) but when it
was Dave Allison he always gave it to one of the "toilers" who
are the backbone of the FL. With that criterion employed, I
should think Rob Lewis stands a good chance if he hasn't had it
before.

I have been fortunate to have watched him referee several times
and also meet socially whilst away for a weekend to celebrate
the retirement of a long standing FL referee.
Someone who seems to be a safe pair of hands and as others have
mentioned, a really nice guy who is happy to chat about
anything.
A credit to the profession....

Over the years there have been a few referees whose retirement
might have caused me to celebrate. I imagine that you are a more
charitable soul than I am.
