Castres v Exeter HCC - Frank Murphy
By: RCG Date: December 11, 2022, 12:59 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
On a very cold, still French evening (9pm ko locally) Exeter
returned to clinical, winning ways. In the end the better team
at both ends of the pitch. The late ko ensured the travelling
support was well lubricated and very vocal, giving the
atmosphere quite the Devonian feel. The key moment being a scrum
penalty, having conceded 2 penalties, the forwards stepped up
       and secured possession.
Castres were poor, kicked away a lot of good, front foot ball.
Clinical in the loose when Exeter had the ball, somewhat
direction-less when they had their hands on it.
The main talking point in the stands was the refereeing of the
break down. Initially Exeter used one up runners, got isolated
and the Castres loose forwards gobbled it up. I believe at least
3 of the first 4 penalties were Ex holding on.
After that it became a bun fight - side entries, illegal clear
outs, time given to attackers that was not given in the first 15
minutes, generally allowing for the side with momentum to almost
       act as they pleased.
Murphy was helped out a few times either by AR or TMO to give
       breakdown offences.
The level of questioning bordering dissent by Castres was an
indication of their frustrations; even through pink shaded
glasses I tended to see their point.
His whistle is not very loud, arm signals at times confusing and
his patience at scrum time was stoic, if slightly misplaced.
The locals sensing it was not their night enjoyed relaying
       events in Qatar to us.
The Christmas market was well designed and cleverly staged
adding to an enjoyable, whirlwind tour of this part of southern
       France.
