R JONES - Newcastle v Chelsea

An absolutely stonking end to the game with tackles flying in
and a horrible brawl to conclude proceedings. I’m sure the FA
will be having a butchers at the ugly scenes.
I thought Jones did really well all told, however I don’t think
any official could have controlled the fiasco at the end.
To be fair, he played two superb advantages during the last
embers and then carded afterwards.

I thought he was fine, didn't get anything wrong, and played
some great advantages. Not sure there was anything he could do
about the last 90 seconds which were just chaotic.
Am interested in people's thoughts on him pushing Pulisic away?
I'm not a fan personally, I don't think a referee should be
doing that when if roles were reversed, we'd be calling for the
player to be carded.

One of the greatest officials in the world wasn’t afraid to do
it…. and no one would argue with the dead eye stare of Pierluigi
Collina.

We’ve seen a couple of teams fined in the last few weeks for
similar so let’s see if the fa do the same to both teams here?
Jones was good, let it flow and cautioned when needed. I know he
played advantage but I would probably have blown for the 2nd one
and take the sting out of the game, but all good learning

Rob Jones was the best referee I've seen in the Championship by
some distance, and I'm pretty sure now he is getting a chance he
will go on to be one of the top three SG1 referees.
Was really good today.

I’ve only seen one poor clip of it online.
Obviously, it’s something to generally avoid, but if an official
is in a position to push a player, it’s usually because the
player has entered their personal space. The options are then:
step back surrendering authority; stay in close proximity which
is awkward and reduces control; or to reclaim space and some
authority.
If you can do three with a firm but considered ‘push’ then it’s
fine, as the alternative is to show passive deference which is
unlikely to help. We also don’t know what was said, but yes,
generally to be avoided - if possible.
As a side note, the situation is worse for assistant referees,
as they both have less space to retreat to, and have less
control to begin with.

The issues in stoppage time stemmed initially from Burn pushing
Havertz in the back on around 92 mins. Fairly innocuous in
itself and to me, clearly a hangover from last season’s fixture
at Stamford Bridge where Havertz elbowed Burn in the face and
escaped with only a yellow card before going on to score the
winner. Obviously a bit of ill feeling remains on Burn’s part
for what looked a deliberate act at the time. Would the referee
be aware/briefed on history like this between particular players
before a match?
It all got a bit messy from then, but I think Jones handled it
well with yellow cards where needed. The only questionable one
for me was to Pope, which looked to be for time wasting, which
would be fair enough we’re Schar not down injured at the time.
Others seemed fine, including Lascelles who managed to get
booked despite not being on the pitch. As a Newcastle fan, it’s
quite nice in a way to see the team able to engage in some of
the darker arts of the game to hold onto a lead after years of
being rolled over by “bigger” opponents in such situations.
Jones dealt with everything appropriately and some of Chelsea’s
players and staff lost their heads at the end.
No real issue with Jones pushing Pulisic away. As mentioned
above, the ref needs to maintain authority and it’s notable that
despite everything else that was going on, at no point was Jones
surrounded by groups of complaining players. Whilst things got a
bit messy at the end, he was in control throughout.

It probably helps the fact Rob Jones is built like an outside
toilet and must be easily 6ft 4 :)
