Manchester City v Brentford- Peter Bankes (VAR: David Coote)

A couple of busy minutes between 25' and 30'
Handball on edge of the box couldn't be given as a pen, no
conclusive angle, on field decision stays
The manic 20 seconds in the City box, certainly no foul on
Haaland and De bruyne being tackled was too soft, however that
begs the question why was a penalty give last week??
Good work from Bankes who kept a cool head and coote in var

Detecting Cancelo's dive was very good because Bankes used pure
intuition (or to say it another way - he guessed) to get the
decision correct - he was caught too far right and not in a good
position to assess the incident. Good call. Many, many KMIs
which will/would need a detailed look back on but overall I saw
a very competent but only modestly able referee (no real
advantages for him in personality, movement, decision-taking
etc) referee today - PGMOL made the right decision to hook
Bankes from the FIFA list, his prospects internationally would
be quite limited.

I thought he was very good, kept a cool head throughout the game
and got most calls right, vitally all the important ones were
correct
He probably should've booked Guardiola though. Multiple times he
was on the pitch if my eyes don't deceive me!
He looks a safe pair of hands but I do agree with your FIFA
point

Agree. I ought to have ended my first comment on a (deservedly)
positive note - well done to him today, held his nerve in a
difficult match.

It's fairer just to call it as an excellent decision. All that
matters in the end is that the right decision was made

Well I don't know, and it was obviously an "educated guess"
rather than a 'stab in the dark', but it is pretty obvious that
he took this decision from 'experience' rather than excellent
perception/positioning. You can see that he is craining his next
to look through a number of players, and then his first reaction
is not to blow up for a dive, but instead to run left, and then
he 'works out' that probably it was simulation so signals a
defensive freekick and gives the yellow card. Bankes had two
oppotunities to run left to get the perfect 'insight angle' into
the penalty area incident, declined both, and was fortunate that
a 'corridor' opened up through the Brentford players so he could
get a half-decent view.
However, any discussion like that should be in the 'developing
for the future' heading is all is part conjecture, as he got the
decision right.
(@Adam - this was a good/very good decision; an "excellent"
decision would be to caution Foden too for blatant mobbing :)).
EDIT: see this image, the black square is where the referee
ought to have been positioned.

Bankes was very good, I was impressed with his performance.
I wonder if I should guess whether a RTR poster has guessed
whether Bankes guessed? To give a caution you have got to be
pretty sure and by his action and body language Bankes looked
pretty sure to me.

Lots of penalty appeals for City and Peter Bankes did well not
to fall for any of them like his colleague did last weekend.
I still think his first instinct was penalty for the cancelo
dive hence the run to the left but I think he just saw the fall
(he was poorly positioned) and then had already blown so decided
on a dive (good call)
De Bruyne was lucky not to be carded for as bad a dive as the
one last week.
