Manchester City v Fulham - Darren England

An incident packed game and the two big calls, the penalties
were IMHO, correct.
Cancelo made no effort to play the ball, barged the attacker in
the back and as it was DOGSO, an obvious red card.
Daft challenge in added time at the end of the match to give
City their penalty, and England again got it spot on.
The one gripe was the ubiquitous VAR, which ruled out a Haaland
goal for offside. In days of yore, the goal would have stood.
Now it is fractions of millimetres and the goal was harshly
chalked off.
Be interesting to read the comments from our erstwhile Fulham
correspondents, which is always well considered and insightful.

I thought in the main Darren England did brilliantly, the bold
(and correct) decisions to award the smaller away team a penalty
and issue a red card against the mighty City at home. Even if
you had any doubts about the decision, once a penalty had been
awarded then it had to be a red card for DOGSO. Another decision
to award Bernardo a yellow card for dissent showed strong match
management, and have no complaints about any yellow cards issued
to Fulham players (except this means half our first team are now
either injured or suspended for Manchester United it seems).
In reference to the two VAR disallowed goals for offside, I
called them both in real time and the freeze frame replays were
clear enough to see they were offside without the lines being
drawn/overlaid. So I'd disagree about them being fractions of
millimetres in this case, although there have been other
decisions previously which do fall into this category. For this
match, I think the use of VAR for these two offside goals was
perfectly placed/the correct balance.
Where I wish Darren England could've been bolder, Kevin De
Bruyne's disgraceful pirouette and theatrics for the City
penalty. From the slo-mo I'm not sure if Robinson or De Bruyne
initiated contact and honestly think VAR should've asked England
to look at it again to make sure he was happy with the decision.
Technically if Robinson has made the first contact, then despite
the theatrics, then the award was correct. Had England not
awarded a penalty, would VAR have asked him to take another
look?
On the balance of play, the result was correct. Personally I
think Fulham missed a big chance to get something here and
should've been more positive with City choosing not to replace
Cancelo. They retained their whole midfield/attacking formation
but were definitely more vulnerable at the back had Fulham
pressed more. Perhaps the absence of Mitrovic, Kebano and
Decordova-Reid was too much of an obstacle.

Man United v Newcastle game weren’t

I agree with almost everything you have said. What I would say
in relation to the KDB theatrics is, if the contact had have
been made and he simply grabbed his foot in pain, without
falling, would the penalty have been given? Personally, I don't
think so, and I think it's more an IFAB issue in that players
have to show the referee (or VAR?) that the contact has been
made.
I don't think it can be argued that it wasn't a penalty, it's
just very sad that so many players either feel the need to, or
have to do something similar for penalties to be awarded.
The only thing I disagree with is the Haaland offside. I don't
know if it was our broadcaster in Australia, but the main image
before the lines appeared looked like Haaland's arm was the only
part of his body that was offside. It was only when the lines
were drawn that it was
clearly shown as offside.
Wasn't there supposed to be a ruling this season in relation to
offside that gave a slight advantage of distance to the
attacking player? I seem to remember Mike Riley talking about
this; is this still in effect?

Haaland offside is correct. The benefit of doubt to attacker
comes in when the lines touch. They clearly don't here. You can
see he is offside without the lines based on the pitch lines.
Good decision with the penalty and the RC from Darren England.
Unfortunately he fell for a dive with the second one. Slight
contact doesn't mean a foul. That was a farce. What planet was
Stuart Attwell on at Shockley Park.
