Preston v Swansea Mr Busby

Overall no complaints. Swansea their usual pretty with no
cutting edge in the final third. A few comments about Mr Busby.
Never seen him before. Steady enough. Outstanding 10 yards at
free kicks. At least 12 yds at most. My only complaint is not
just aimed at him but a lot of referees. Time wasting. They
allow it to happen to easily. Freddie Woodman in possession of
the ball took so long to get rid of it. Over 20 seconds on
average the longest being 28 seconds. As far as I am aware. Law
12 still states that he should release it from his arms in 6
seconds. It really is a joke. Either get rid of that rule or
enforce it. Although this is aimed at Mr Busby. I can’t honestly
think of any ref that enforces it. I know people will comment
but why is it when refs progress they seem to ignore this law

I suspect they've been told to ignore the law as far as
possible, but add the time on at the end of the half. The Crewe
goalie is a case-in-point and I have noticed how much time has
been added on by referees at Gresty Road this season, which on
more than one occasion has proved fatal for the Alex. The other
week, Carl Brook reversed a throw-in after it had been taken
from the wrong spot and despite warnings. Good on Carl but there
was another instance which you don't see too often in League
football.

I am struggling to see how someone making defenders retreat 12
yards at free kicks can be outstanding at enforcing the 10
yards. Overestimating the distance is as wrong as
underestimating it.

It definitely isn't "as wrong" as underestimating it, as the
laws state players must be at least 10 yards. Definitely
preferable for some slight aggrandisement compared to
depreciation.

I was always very generous with my estimation of 10 yards,
especially at "ceremonial" free kicks, as I knew the defenders
would shuffle forward a bit before or as the kick was taken.
That still left me with the option to caution and retake if the
encroachment was serious and they were less than the required
minimum.
