I was under the impression the claims for a penalty were because
of a barge in the back, but I tend to agree with Mikael's
interpretation of what happened there.
However, I wasn't clear from the video at full speed what the
situation was when looking at the legs of both players. Maybe
nothing in it, but it's a pity we don't have a slo-mo of what
might just be a coming together or whether there was a
significant contact / trip by the defender.

That's not a penalty, the attacker moves his left leg into the
direction of the defender and stops. Might have been given it
in previous seasons, but not now with the instruction to allow
more contact to go.

Try right clicking on the video image, select speed from menu
then select 1/4 to get a slower speed. The menu will disappear
when you click on the screen again. You can fairly easily stop
frame and see the attacker step across the defender's path.
Whether that would still be considered as a penalty is anyone's
guess considering the general inconsistency as to how the laws
are applied.

Many thanks for the tip Microscopist. That's something new
learned.
An interesting incident. It's certainly a tangle of legs and I
agree the attacker steps across the defender's path. But it
looks to me as if the defender tries to reach the ball with his
left leg, doesn't succeed and catches the attacker. Whether
that's enough for a penalty is anyone's guess but had there been
VAR I doubt he would have intervened. Not a clear and obvious
error in my view.

You have to ask not just why the attacker's left leg went out
like it did, but also why he slowed himself down. He was trying
to buy a penalty, if referees don't award what can really only
be described as an attempt to buy a penalty surely this can only
be a good thing.

Given the lengthy debate on her about whether or not this was a
penalty, should Paul Ince's original comments ("Ince rages at
total joke referee" and "a joke, an absolutely total joke - I
feel like I've been conned by the referee today and thats what
makes me angry") continue to go unchallenged / un-punished?.

IMO no. He has an official channel available to him to voice his
opinions regarding a referee performance or particular decision
and the press is not it.

Apparently, Kevin Friend had the dubious pleasure of telephoning
Mr Ince on Monday to pass on an apology from Jeremy Simpson who
has admitted making a mistake. Fair play to Simpson for that. I
am hoping Mr Ince would have taken the opportunity to apologise
for his post match comments. Sadly I'm not sure that will have
happened though.
Ironically, in Reading's game last night, their opponents had a
very decent claim for a penalty which wasn't awarded and the
game was drawn. That's football I suppose.

I don't suppose Mr Ince has ever made a mistake!!! - what a sad
reflecton of where we are

I'm not sure a debate about whether the decision was correct or
not should have any bearing - either the comments are considered
in line or they're not.
