Spurs vs Sporting Lisbon - Danny Makkelie

What do you guys thing of the VAR non-goal decision at the end?
Is it correct that they draw the line from the Spurs players
head and not his right leg that looks further forward? Just
looking at the clear image my thoughts are how can that possibly
be offside - the player who heads across looks considerably
further forward than Kane. But happy to stand corrected!

The line is drawn from the ball - it only matters whether Kane
is ahead or behind that.

I thought it was 100% a ridiculous decision to disallow it ,
weather it was right or wrong is another matter , but sorry I
just don’t agree with it .
I thought Makkelie was superb throughout as was his assistants ,
he appeared to be the calmest person in the stadium and showed
why for me is the worlds number one referee

Presumably it was made using the new semi-automated software?

Although the line should be drawn through the ball in this
situation, the still frame below suggests otherwise with Kane
appearing to be behind the ball (and, therefore, not in an
offside position, i.e. he's not nearer the opponents' goal line
than the ball when the ball is played) when it was headed
towards him.

It can't possibly be wrong because VAR is ALWAYS correct
---isn't it?

Some interesting points thrown up by this incident. Firstly, as
usual, the lack of knowledge of the Laws by players and
commentators is staggering. Comments about the ball going
backwards meaning there couldn't be an offside. Similarly with
comments about the ball striking a defender resetting the phase
of play. Both nonsense of course. Then there are the ludicrous
theatrics of the Spurs manager who was absolutely convinced that
the goal was fair (and got himself sent off as a result) from a
position from which he couldn't possibly know. However the key
point here is whether the lines have been accurately drawn.
This has long been a bugbear of mine, usually related to
determining the point at which the ball was played. In this
case it's a question of whether the lines have accurately
calculated the position of the ball and the player (Kane) from
cameras which are parallel with them. The long and the short of
it is that we either have to accept that the software which does
this calculation is correct or the whole VAR offside system
collapses.

Was just about to add that very picture myself - clear as day
offside when you see this angle!
It's a sorry state of affairs when a referee/VAR are being
slated for the correct decision within the LOTG. The only issue
I have with it is the length of time it took but having spoken
to people who have used VAR there are limitations with the
technology and having an image from the correct angle so that
lines can be drawn accurately is one of those issues, I am led
to believe. Perhaps that added to the time taken?

The line gets drawn from the front of the ball, not the centre
of it.
