The handball against Gabriel I think Oliver got right mainly
because of the distance the ball travelled to hit his arm, I
also don't think the penalty given was a penalty it would
certainly go down as soft. However both are subjective decisions
some refs would give them others wouldn't
I agree with ref95, Oliver certainly wasn't terrible and didn't
cost Liverpool the game but has had better games like all sports
professionals do.

(arsenal fan so might not be fully impartial)
I watched the game and I thought Oliver had a good game, didn't
care about players rolling around expecting a foul. My favourite
moment was the way he played advantage, I think, for arsenal's
second goal.
The Gabriel non penalty, to be fair, I thought might be given as
others have said, that tends to be the case this season, so was
surprised it wasn't given.
The Thiago on Jesus penalty, for me it's a penalty, but it's one
of those ones, where I don't think VAR will get involved either
way, if Oliver gives it, like he did, it'll stay that way and
vice Versa, which is VAR being used correctly.
And really really poor management from PGMOL, I swear Ive said
that before. But could there have been a game on Wednesday he
could have done as I feel this game needed Oliver, but if you
know the UCL appointment a week in advance why appoint him to
this, give it to Taylor or Pawson.

It's good to be able to debate refereeing decisions in a
civilised way as most of us try to do but let's not lose sight
of the fact that it was a thrilling and enjoyable spectacle.
Another great PL game at least for the neutral. Yes, some
players and the coaches went over the top but I noticed at the
end of the game relations between the players of both teams
seemed fairly amicable. I agree with Tweed that Michael Oliver
managed the game well.

Didn't watch the whole match, so I can only comment on what
MOTD2 showed.
Offside shout in the build up to Arsenal's first goal - looks to
be level or close enough that its within the margin of
tolerance. Seems strange that we didn't see the lines drawn on
though.
The handball by Gabriel is a definite penalty IMO, it's
blindside of MO and the AR is out of position so he may not have
been able to see it either, but for me VAR has got to be getting
involved there.
Penalty for Arsenal - it's a penalty. Jesus gets his foot to the
ball first, and Thiago kicks the opponent and not the ball. Very
clear foul IMO.

Got to say I always find the discussion on here very interesting
to read! If we, as referees, have this much debate amongst
ourselves it’s no wonder we’re all called inconsistent!

Felt Oliver controlled the game pretty well generally. Tried to
let it flow and left minor offences alone for the betterment of
the game. But then gives the softest of the lot inside the box.
Not sure VAR would ever get involved in this sort of incident in
the PL as it’s the most tiny of touches and therefore check
complete would be the best outcome for VAR in my opinion.
I was reasonably surprised VAR didn’t intervene on the Gabriel
handball incident as his arm was above shoulder level and
blocked the ball. The only mitigating factors being the speed
and distance from the ball. But with it being raised up I felt
that the arm position would over ride and an OFR would come.
Alas it didn’t. That’s what makes football so interesting I
guess.

Yes, almost a touch of the Mike Dean about it except he didn't
celebrate when the ball went in the net!

That was my guess, from the image shown on screen there was
absolutely no way they could draw a line, you just couldn't see
which part of the body was furthest forward. In that case they
have no choice but to stick with the original decision.

Interesting to hear Dermot Gallagher thought the Gabriel
handball incident was an incorrect decision and also the Penalty
given to Arsenal was incorrect, the latter goes against the
guidelines on contact he stated.
The handball incident he says var should have asked for an OFR,
if i remember rightly Oliver was struggling to get a clear view
of this incident, but his assistant ought to have been looking
straight at it.
I am not sure i agree with Dermot, but then who am i to say
whats right and wrong.
