Chris Kavanagh - West Ham v Fulham

The more I see of Kavanagh, the less I rate him. You could argue
today that it was VAR who let Fulham down, it wasn't that cut
and dried. Fulham were also complicit. For the penalty, Pereira
was an idiot and even if Dawson was hurling himself towards him,
Kavanagh had warned Pereira about blocking his run two or three
times, so it was no surprise when Dawson ran at Pereira and got
blocked off that a penalty was awarded. I don't know if VAR
could've or should've intervened, the decision could've
literally gone either way (and usually is given to the defending
team). For the first 'handball' goal, it clearly brushed his
hand/elbow, that was obvious after VAR replayed it to ad
nauseum. Personally I don't think it made any difference to the
attacker, but I thought in this situation it had to be ruled out
still? In this case, Fulham's defending/offside trap was useless
and Scamacca had time to control the ball with his hands 10
times. For the goal by Antonia, he much more obviously
controlled it with his hands but VAR didn't even bother to
review it?? Even then, not content with winning the ball back,
Tim Ream decided to give it back Antonio. Fulham are one thing
but how can VAR be so inconsistent? As for Kavanagh, his foul
detection was mainly excellent but similar fouls by Fulham
players were deemed worthy of yellow cards where West Ham
weren't. Why is that?

I have to politely disagree. Foul detection was very good and
Kavanagh tried to keep cards in his pocket but when the yellows
are that obvious he cannot just ignore them. Penalty absolutely
correct, although at first I did think the 2nd goal was
handball. Having looked at numerous replays I still cannot make
my mind up, so no clear and obvious error.
I missed the third goal so cannot comment.
I am absolutely thrilled as well that Silva was finally shown a
yellow card for dissent. He was heckling the 4th official at
every opportunity, and the way he whinged about every single
decision was embarrassing. He wants to look at himself and his
team first and foremost

So you mostly agreed then :) The 2nd goal being and handball and
as I said, I thought his foul detection was very good, (but his
awarding of cards less so). The high kick on Dan James
definitely a yellow for me, a few times late challenges were
allowed to go and only an advantage played and/or potentially
cynical challenges when Fulham were looking to attack. I'm not
disputing any of the cards given, but they just seemed
one-sided. I don't have a problem with yellow cards for whinging
coaches (or players), I'd like to see more of them to be honest
nor penalties for obvious fouls at/before corners as long as
there's consistency.
Fulham fans are possibly overreacting on social media, but I can
understand their frustration as last time Kavanagh reffed Fulham
he allowed Preston a goal that was clearly handled twice in the
immediate build up

As a neutral my only complaint is that it took until the 2nd
half for Marco Silva to be booked. Perhaps if he spent as much
time looking at his tactics or his players as he does bleating
in the 4O ear maybe he'd notice where his team are going wrong.
Penalty correct
2nd goal - there was some contact on the hand I think and who
knows what is and isn't handball these days, it changes every 5
mins and becomes more & more complicated. I've not seen a
replay.
3rd goal - pathetic and shocking defending.
Well done Kav & team. They're not the ones at fault in this
match.

What is the difference between the allowed goal after the
Antonio handball and the disallowed goal after the Rashford
handball (if it didn't hit the allowed part).
If anything Antonio moved his arm to control it.
Both should be goals really

I was at the game today. Firstly, before any comment on
Kavanagh, what a horrible, soulless, sterile football ground
that is. Feel sorry for West Ham fans, I certainly couldn’t
watch every home game there.
As for the comments on Silva, I totally agree. He’s been
embarrassing on the touch line this season. He’s not doing
himself or Fulham any favours. He needs to have a stern word
with himself.
There was a scything tackle early on as Fulham were attacking
down the left which was a clear and obvious yellow. Another high
foot into a chest was a clear yellow. Neither were given yet
Fulham players booked for a lot less. I really hope that doesn’t
come across as a whinging fan of a team that’s lost. Just saying
it exactly as I see it.
Overall didn’t think he was good nor bad, just middling. Pereira
was an idiot for the penalty.
The other two I’d put the blame firmly on VAR. Scamacca does
touch the ball with his hand before he scores. Should be
disallowed.
As for the 3rd goal. Yes it is shocking defending. But there is
as clear as you’ll see handball from Antonio as he knocks the
ball into the area. No matter how bad the defending is, that
goal has to be ruled out by VAR. It’s a shocking mistake.
Kavanagh was ok, certainly not great

For me, the penalty is very soft when seen as an isolated
incident. However, idiotic from the Fulham defender having been
warned twice previously so fully understand why it was given.
West Ham’s second May have been handball, it may not, again can
understand why this was given.
For me the third goal should be ruled out, it’s still the same
phase of play and it’s the player who scores, Fulham never clear
the ball between the handball and the goal. Having said that,
calling the defending shambolic is generous.

I urge everyone to watch the highlights on MOTD2, whilst Danny
Murphy said all three goals were wrong (no obvious bias there
haha), all three pundits were largely in agreement. Yes, Silva
deserved his yellow and it was stupid by Pereira for the penalty
but perhaps Dawson did smash into him? In the context of an
almost identical goal for Rashford being ruled out correctly for
handball, how was Antonio's not even reviewed, despite the
shambolic defending by Fulham? The 2nd goal when reviewed in
slow-mo and from the correct angle, you could clearly see the
ball change rotation after brushing his hand. Personally I'd be
gutted to have a goal ruled out for handball in those
circumstances, but VAR has to apply the law correctly and
consistently.

Had Antonio scored from his first shot then I'm certain the goal
would have been disallowed, however law states that accidental
handling is only an offence if a goal is scored "immediately"
after, which isn't the case here IMO.
As an aside, if VAR/the referee does decide that it was
immediate enough to disallow the goal, then it's DOGSO for the
foul by the Fulham player, right?
