Wigan face FA rap after Cardiff City triumph as Mark Hudson
reveals game played with two different sized goals.
Cardiff City's Championship triumph at Wigan will be at the
centre of an FA probe after it was revealed different sized
goalposts were used during the game.
Wigan face a potential FA rap over the issue at their DW Stadium
home.
Cardiff caretaker boss Mark Hudson explained how two of his
coaching staff spotted the crossbar Cardiff were defending in
the first half was two inches taller than the one they were
trying to score in at the other end.
Hudson told referee James Bell of his concerns, but according to
the Star he was informed it would take “two hours” to
investigate the problem. The match went ahead with
different-sized goals.
Hudson said: "Two of my coaching staff spotted the problem,
which we tried to flag straight away.
"We were initially told we'd have to wait a couple of hours for
it to sink another couple of inches, but no-one wanted that.
"We decided to continue with it, and it was the same for the two
sides."
The game was delayed for seven minutes while the matter was
investigated. The FA will demand answers from Wigan as to how
this happened.
According to the Sun, the decision to go ahead with the game
"came after match and club officials agreed to play as fans were
already in the stadium."

I'm guessing its because they keep taking away and replacing due
to Rugby.
Although a snsible decision to play the game how does it stand
as per the LOTG.

The distance between the inside of the posts is 7.32 m (8 yds)
and the distance from the lower edge of the crossbar to the
ground is 2.44 m (8 ft).
and
If the crossbar becomes displaced or broken, play is stopped
until it has been repaired or replaced in position. Play is
restarted with a dropped ball. If it cannot be repaired the
match must be abandoned. A rope or any flexible or dangerous
material may not replace the crossbar.

The referee could find himself with some questions to answer,
especially if he was alerted to it as has been claimed.
Fortunately the away team won, otherwise they could potentially
be looking at a replay.
It happens a lot at grassroots where they remove the goalposts
between games, and especially at the start of a new season.
Soil and other foreign get into the homes and the posts sit on
top of it so are too high.

To add to the intrigue, apparently the third Cardiff goal went
in off the underside of the heightened crossbar

Could this not be a problem, surely the size of the goalmouth is
written in law. I wonder if Bell contacted the PGMOL about
this, if not he might be in trouble.

I heard about this last night on Have I Got News For You.
It seems quite surprising to me that the game continued as this
sounds a pretty fundamental issue. Indeed, they suggested on the
programme that one of the goals might not otherwise have been
scored.
Are the officials normally expected to measure the length of the
posts and crossbar? I seem to remember there was a docuemtary
with David Elleray where they realised some of the markings on
the pitch were wrong pre-match and got the groundsman to re-do
them.
I'd have thought a referee would wish to check with the
authorities in such situations as to what to do and if there was
a 7 minute delay perhaps this did happen. It will be interesting
to hear more as the matter is investigated further.

Were they rugby posts at one end and football posts at the
