S ATTWELL - Leeds v Villa

This game will get a red card if the players carry on in this
fashion. Some real aggro and needle in the match is Attwell
trying to control it.
He hasn’t lost control and has done well IMO.

I will be surprised if this remains 11 vs 11 - there is a
definitely an edge to this game.

Well two minutes into the second half and the red is out….
Sinisterra gone for two yellows, the second is so stupid when
blocking the free kick being taken.
Leeds have some real disciplinary problems at the moment.

And within 3 minutes of the restart, there's a sending off!
Absolute stupidity of Sinisterra to do that - about a clear a
second yellow as Stuart will ever have to give.

Been a stinking game for a ref, nothing dreadful but lots of
niggle and needle and you'll never get everything right in that
scenario but he's got a lot more right than wrong and nothing
major wrong, he should be well chuffed with how he's done - a
few years ago he'd have lost control of this but never looked
like happening today.

That was an extremely good performance from Attwell, the
behaviour of the players, especially the Leeds ones, was very
poor and he has done very well to keep it under control. Leeds
are going to find themselves in serious problems if they keep
playing like that. I can't remember a Premier League game where
one team have given away so many fouls, 23 according to the BBC,
and I don't think many if any of them were wrong.
Can understand the point about Baily not being cautioned in the
2nd minute, but I don't think it was done in anger, rather
frustration at himself. If anything it would be delaying the
restart rather than dissent, and with the multiball system now
in use I'm not sure it did delay the restart. Also suspect how
early in the game it was influenced his decision.

With Attwell opting not to card Bailey in the first 2 minutes
after booting the ball 40 yards away after a Leeds free kick,
the decision to send Sinisterra off loses much credibility.
Consistency is key, and Attwell was not in the slightest bit
consistent from minute 1. You won’t find many Leed fans unhappy
with the ref card itself, but Attwell was poor today from a
consistency stand point.

I would add that team ref were by far the best team on the field
today. A nasty, niggly match with very little to cheer on from
either side, two very poor teams trying to play the game.

I have to agree with charlieboy. I was at the game. In over 70
years of watching professional football I have never seen a
crowd so incensed and vociferous against a referee. Mr Attwell
was poor from the first to the last whistle. Inconsistent,
lacking control and had little respect from the players. Twice
he walked from the halfway line to the Villa keeper to talk to
him about time wasting just adding to the time wasted. No
further action taken so the time wasting continued. Allowed
himself to be surrounded by the Villa players after awarding
them free kick and booking a Leeds player. The Villa keeper
raced from his penalty area to the half way line to remonstrate
with the referee, again no action. The local and national radio
after the game were very critical of Mr Attwell. He couldn't
get off the field quick enough after the final whistle avoiding
all of the players.

Not watched or seen anything from the game but the reaction
suggests it was a similar game to arsenal vs Man City last
season. One where Attwell was incredibly inconsistent in favour
of one team, resulting in the other side falling out from him.
In fact it’s almost identical sounding.
I like Attwell as a referee he is really capable of being a top
referee, however he has too many of these games when they a bit
challenging.
Michael Oliver showed today that booking players inside one
minute should be done if the tackle deserves it, not doing it
creates issues later in the game.
Edit- just seen it and it’s stupid from the Leeds player. But
Attwell looked genuinely confused while giving the card.
It’s this lack of authority and inconsistent decision making
that let’s Attwell down. That’s the difference between him being
a solid referee and a top class referee.
