Rugby Mens Autumn International's

So, the Autumn tests are due to start at the end of October into
November and I thought I would kick the topic off with
predictions for the main matches that have been announced so
far.
There has been a lot of criticism aimed at the refereeing in the
last 2 sets of windows in the summer and in the Rugby
Championship with the main issues surrounding consistency in
high tackles with the relevant sanction and also the sheer
number of penalties being awarded resulting in a stop/start
match with some officials coming into fire for wanting to be the
centre of attention.
in fact, really only Gardner, Pearce & Amashukeli have not
received so much backlash, Barnes, Peyper & Carley had people
talking but not to the likes of Adamson, Berry, Doleman,
Dickson, Williams, Murphy, Brace, O Keefe (to a degree) & Raynal
have in the RC.
Now, whilst I'm not an advocate of the bashing BUT, I can't help
feeling that some of the officiating has been mind blowing at
times. I would also say WR need to get a grips with some of the
laws and no doubt will be spelling out to their elite referees
the issues and expectations during the next series.
Appointments will be due out in the next 10 days - and as a
result of the problems I have made the predictions keeping
officials away from certain nations. I don't see WR changing any
plans with the current crop of referees so would expect Adamson,
Amashukeli, Dickson Doleman & Murphy to feature in these
appointments.

I take an interest in Rugby Union but can't claim any real
expertise about the best referees. From what I've seen on TV I
think Gardner and Pearce are outstandingly good and Barnes
clearly is an exceptional referee though his style is rather
marmite and I don't like it. Peyper never convinces me and
neither does Carley. Beyond that I can't really offer an
opinion.
Last Saturday I saw Saracens play Gloucester. A close and at
time exciting match. I have wondered why a certain referee, who
a very knowledgeable RU friend of mine tipped to really go
places a few years ago, hasn't, as yet, made much of an impact
on the international scene. Craig Maxwell-Keys. Well, I think I
now know the reason. His refereeing absolutely strangled the
game; I have never heard so much whistle. I suppose he more or
less kept control of proceedings but it detracted enormously
from the spectacle. He didn't seem to have much natural
authority with the players and so had to keep the tightest
control by continually blowing up for infringements. I can see
that wouldn't be very desirable by those seeking to market
international rugby.

I'm certainly no expert but watch a lot of Union and generally
my predictions are wrong haha so I'm certainly not in the know!!
However, agree ref Gardner, Pearce and to an extent Barnes.
Carley has grown into an excellent referee for me and I've never
had any issue with Peyper (I know others on this site disagree
with me). For me, these 5 (plus O Keefe) are probably the top in
the world right now.
It's a shame CMK never really hit the heights on the world stage
as I rated him generally. I think ultimately he knew that he
would not move up the ladder under the current regime of Jutge
(no idea why) after seeing the likes of Dickson, Ridley and more
recently Leale move ahead of him on the world stage.This
probably was a major factor in his decision to go part-time from
this season ultimately ending his international career.
I think what's fundamentally interesting is that in the last 6
months a number of ex internationals and rugby commentators
(particularly in the SH) have highlighted the stop/start play
resulting in Rugby League moving ahead of the union code in
terms of viewers. With France 23 around the corner, there are
real concerns that it will not be the spectacle that we have
seen in England 15 and Japan 19!!
The main factors revolve around the laws being far too
complicated and officials taking the lime-light.
Now, my take is that i's is very clear to me we are not getting
the quality matches that we have had the luxury of seeing going
back 18 months. I agree the laws are constantly evolving, I'm
not sure that's the whole reason we see that much of a change
that has made the sport so stop start. The sheer number of
penalties are affecting the flow (Murphy gave 28 penalties
against Argentina in the last fixture - that's just crazy!). Do
we blame the officials or the laws? This for me needs to be
addressed ASAP!
I don't agree that referees try to take the spotlight. The
reality is that whilst the likes of Garces, Poite & Gauzerre
have retired, the majority of the panel of referees have
remained stable over the past 3-4 years. So, is it the edicts
coming from WR that's affecting the way the referee matches
compared to 18 months ago?
Finally, players need to take responsibility in the way they
tackle (in particular) which has resulted in a huge increase in
the number of yellow/red cards which must have a factor in how
the game pans out. This comes down to education and coaching.
As I said, WR really need to address these issues before France
23 otherwise we will continue to have the same issues with more
people turning off and no-body wants that!

he was another marmite referee and I really liked and
appreciated his style though I appreciate not everyone did.
Barnes is clearly regarded as a world class referee, I'm sure
correctly, so I have given some thought as to why I don't like
the way he referees. I think it reminds me too much of a jobbing
Counsel in the County Court.

Dickson has improved immeasurably and may be a silent riser up
the rankings.
The game needs speeding up but imho the law needs changing here.
The sanction for messing around, delaying the match, is a scrum
and we need those like a hole in the head. Free kick perhaps?
Secondly the breakdown is still a mess and Warburton highlighted
another issue whereby players can and do roll someone out of the
way. Neck rolls are illegal but if a leg or ankle is trapped
serious injury can result from a body roll.
Barnes has a method of cutting out immaterial offences and
allowing the game to flow. His reputation and record allows him
leeway lesser or inexperienced referees perhaps do not get.

I'm still undecided about Dickson if I'm honest, he just doesn't
fill me with confidence, in time perhaps as Carley has improved
dramatically over the past 2 years.
I think Barnes just shades the number one spot for me but Pearce
and Gardner are closing in on that spot.
I always enjoyed Poite as a referee - like Barnes, he certainly
divided opinion.
Agree the breakdown is a mess still and the game needs speeding
up. WR seriously need to get on top of this to bring back the
viewers!

So, the appointments have been released and huge congrats to
Wayne Barnes who will make history and IMHO 2 huge matches
really cementing what WR believes that he is the number 1 ref in
the world with Wales v New Zealand (Test 100) & France v S
Africa (Test 101).
Congrats also to Peyper & Pearce who reach 60 & 40 tests
themselves and pleased for the newbies of Ridley, Piardi &
Busby. Interesting that Frank Murphy gets a game (not previously
acting as referee for a number of windows).
Amashukeli rewarded with 2 games with Ireland v S Africa being
another huge test for him - I think he now has 1 foot in the
door for France as Adamson gets the lesser Italy v SA game,
Dickson possibly the other one with Scotland v Argentina.
Doleman gets the interesting Eng v Jap match whilst Damon Murphy
with 2 lesser teams after harsh criticism a couple of weeks ago.
I think it's safe to say that of the big hitters, Williams,
Brace & Raynal have been punished for their efforts and stay out
of the limelight (right decision).
Interesting that Berry gets the huge ENG v NZ game, he remains
out of S Africa matches as expected!
Expected appointments for Pearce, Gardner, Carley, O Keefe &
Peyper for me too.
As usual, my predictions were rubbish hahah!!
