Interesting that three of the promoted refs - Drysdale, Stroud
and Woolmer - are still there 18 years later! Russell Booth
might have been another but his career was cut short by injury,
a bit like Michael Naylor and James Adcock. I recall seeing
Russell at Hillsborough on Easter Saturday 2008 when the Palace
equalised in the last minute, only we couldn't see the goal at
the far end due to the snowfall! I recall seeing Fred Graham (a
bmb favourite!) at Selhurst Park. Paul Melin I understand became
Referees Secretary of the Surrey FA after leaving the list.
Clive Oliver and Jarmail Singh - keeping it in the family! The
only promoted ref that I don't recall at all is Gary Lewis, and
I recall he stayed on the list for quite some time after
refereeing his final FL game, another injury case perhaps?

Gary Lewis had a rather serious brush with the law which brought
his refereeing career to an end. (Hope that is OK mods)
I think Messrs Foster, Desmond and Whitestone were promoted the
following season. The first two both finished due to injury and
Bob Desmond refereed only a handful of games.

My brain cells are atrophying faster than I thought, I don't
recall Foster or Desmond on the National List at all. Dean
Whitestone must have been very young on his first unsuccessful
attempt.

Thank you for letting me know. Good heavens on the List for five
years and I simply cannot recall him or even his name at all.
Really rather worrying.

I recall the name David Foster when he was on the list but
cannot place him.
Ref my earlier post, it was David Crick of Worcester Park rather
than Paul Melin who became Referees Secretary of the Surrey FA.
Paul was another who I don't recall at all.

David Foster bowed out on the last day of the 2010/11 season
with a game at Bristol Rovers v Sheffield Wednesday which saw
the home team relegated from L1. Mr Desmond finished in December
2005 with Mansfield v Bristol Rovers and the fact that he
finished mid-season certainly suggests that injury or personal
reason caused him to leave the list early.

Fred Graham was demoted at the end of that season and then made
a rapid return for 2006-07. I didn’t see him during the 2004-05
season but he didn’t appear to be a referee anywhere close to
losing his place on his return.

Bob Desmond was on the list in 2005-06 and refereed three League
Two games, three FA Cup ties and a League Trophy game. That was
the extent of his National List (middle) career which was cut
short due to injury.
