Womens RWC 2021 Pool Stage Appointments
DIR By: Alfie75

World Rugby have announced the match official appointments for
the pool rounds of the Rugby World Cup 21 (played in 22). The
delayed tournament kicks off in Auckland on 8 October. New
Zealand referee, Maggie Cogger-Orr will blow the much travelled
whistle in the opening game at Eden Park as France take on South
Africa.
Team favourites;
England’s games will be refereed by Aurélie Groizeleau (Fra),
Joy Neville (Ire) and Lauren Jenner (NZ)
New Zealand’s matches will be refereed by Aimee Barrett-Theron
(SA), Hollie Davidson (Sco) and Aurélie Groizeleau (Fra)
France’s other two matches will overseen by Joy Neville (Ire)
and Amber McLachlan (Aus)
Referee Favourites
The referee appointments for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and
finals will be announced after the pool stage is complete and
the qualifying teams are known.
IMHO as Neville IRE previously Perrett & Corrigan AUS with
McDowel IRE in 2006l (so the last 4 finals split between the
Aussie's & Irish) were in the middle for the Final!!
As mentioned, for me England are hot favourites followed by NZ
and then France, so I think we should certainly discount Sara
Cox as England are on fire for the final match.
Neville had it last time round so, I think a SF is probably the
furthest she will go (maybe AR on the final).
Judging by the appointments - Big contenders would be Davidson,
Barrett-Theron & Jenner
My initial pic would be Barrett-Theron (baring SA reaching the
final).
QF's - Cox, Davidson, Barrett Theron & Jenner
SF's - Neville & Cogger-Orr
3rd - McLachlan or Groizeleau
F - Barrett Theron or Davidson
Focus on alignment, refinement and consistency
World Rugby Referee Talent Development Manager, and former RWC
referee herself, Alhambra Nievas said, “All roads lead to Rugby
World Cup 2021 and in our final weeks our focus is on alignment,
refinement and consistency. We have an exciting mix of match
officials who have worked extremely hard over the last four
years to earn their place in the team. With the selection of the
pool phase schedule complete, it’s an exciting milestone for
match officials to see what games they will officiate, what
stadiums they will be in, and brings a new level of focus for
the team.”

Cant add much to that. I think Cox will do SF (assuming Eng go
as far as predicted)
WR are never afraid to reappoint final refs, so I dont think you
can rule Neville out.

True WR aren't afraid to re-appoint. But tbh I seem to recall
that Andre Watson would not have got the 2003 final if England
didn't reach and ultimately win it!
From all accounts Chris White was the man they were looking at,
But for obvious reasons (just like Wayne Barnes in 2019) Chris
settled with the Bronze medal match.
They held Andre back from the semi's and gave Paddy o Brien &
Chris White matches as both Eng & NZ were involved and as SA
weren't involved he was the reserve if England reached the
final.

So QF's have been set with some very interesting matches. 2 QF
were played in the group stages with Hollie Davidson with NZ
Wales & Barrett-Theron with USA v Canada - Both Scotland and SA
are out, the 2 front runners are definitely in the running
still!
So, for me I'll go for:
Quarter Finals
France v Italy: Davidson//Roche/Zussman/Assmus
New Zealand v Wales: Cox/Groizeleau/Domenjo/Tempest
England v Australia:
Barrett-Theron/Munarini/Benvenuti/Whitehouse
Canada v USA: Jenner/McLachlan/Miller/Jeffrey
Neville & Conger-Orr for the semi's

SF1 probably England v Canada
SF2 probably New Zealand v France
4 remaining appointments will be "interesting" but it would be a
big surprise if Sara Cox does not get NZ v F.

Well as usual got half the appointments wrong!!
Actually I'm surprised with the Neville appointment at this
stage (was expecting a SF appointment - she may still get that)
The main point for me is that Davidson & AB Theron are the main
2 contenders for me.
Semi's I think would go to Cox & Jenner/Groizeleau.
Also a note that Jeffrey doesn't get a TMO appointment which is
strange.

I suspect that Lee Jeffrey & Lauren Jenner have been disciplined
for failing to take appropriate action in the England v SA pool
match when there was a RC offence by SA which they both "missed"
(as I have yet to see the whole game recording I'm guessing that
one or both incorrectly determined that there were mitigating
factors).
Whether one or both are back in the frame for SFs onwards .....
about the only thing that can be guaranteed is that there are
several "red hot" officials all competing for the honor whether
as R, AR or TMO. Each QF should see exemplary officiating.

WR are in a very strong position with at least 4 referees
capable of reffing final and on form.
Given also how the teams are playing I would be very surprised
if we see any upsets over the weekend so would concur with Eng v
Can and NZ v Fra as the semis.
I believe Sara Cox will do NZ/Fra. Other than that it will
depend on who does the best in the QFs - officials are
definitely "fighting" for their places too

I missed the Jenner/Jeffrey and RC situation and this could well
be the reason.
So, possibly a QF ref for a semi final (Neville most likely)
then!

Semi Final Appointments have been announced
So 2 QF refs getting the semi's (could this lead the way for
Davidson now for the final?)
I think expected appointment for Neville. Cox not appointed
which could also tell us she may be saved for one of the last 2
matches.
Jenner and Jeffrey still out of the appointments.
Semi-final 1 - Canada v England
