Immemorable Referees

Thinking back to the 1970s and 1980s there are many referees
whose name and indeed place of origin I remember and I am sure I
saw many of them officiate but I have absolutely no recollection
of them at all. Referees such as Peter Tyldesley, Ivan Smith,
Bill Flood, Alan Porter, Tom Fitzharris, Don Shaw, John Ireland,
Bob Nixon, Ian Hendrick
Of course there wasn't the blanket TV and media coverage then
but I suspect it's because a lot of these officials just got on
and did a solid, unspectacular job rather well and so didn't
draw attention to themselves. Perhaps some of that spirit is
lacking among today's officials who seem to quite relish, or at
least instigate, a lot of attention.

Thanks for these Whistleblower. A few facts about the referees
you have quoted:
Peter Tyldesley - refereed the Manchester derby in May 1991 as
his final game. It was screened live on ITV and commentator
Clive Tyldesley drew attention to his namesake, no family
connections apparently.
Ivan Smith - got into a lot of trouble after being accused of
swearing at Leeds players. Kettle, Pot and Black come to mind!
Alan Porter - refereed non-League Wimbledon v 1st Div
Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in Jan 1977, although Dennis Turner
is shown as refereeing the replay.
Tom Fitzharris - probably the only FL referee to get a mention
in Parliament!
Don Shaw - refereed York's famous 1-0 win over Arsenal in 1985.
Would have refereed the Bradford 'disaster' game in 1985, but
was injured and had to hand over to Norman Glover. Was in touch
with me from nearby Sandbach a few years back, as posted on the
old RTR.
Bob Nixon - the only one of the referees you quote that I have
seen live, a topsy-turvy 'Roy of the Rovers' 3-2 win for
Blackpool v Port Vale.
Ian Hendrick - I believe he was in charge of Oldham 3 Man Utd 6
in Div 1 in 1991/2.
Flood and Ireland - I know nothing about these Northern refs,
although noting that Ireland was only on the list for two
seasons.
As a former 'southern softie', my nomination would be Mike James
of Horsham who spent 12 seasons on the list but I never saw,
either live or on MOTD / Big Match, until halfway through his
career when he refereed a match at West Ham when lino Ray Biggar
landed him in the proverbial following a verbal spat.

Sometimes referees have to earn respect, as the cliché goes. Tom
Fitzharris wholly failed to do so on 19th Nov. 1988.
It was Guisborough Town of the Northern League against fourth
division Bury, F.A. Cup first round played at Ayresome Park
with Fitzharris subsequently accused in the House of Commons of
cheating.
Though Bury led after two minutes, Guisborough had been on top
until the 37th minute when team captain Ray Hankin
was cautioned for allegedly removing his armband.
The former Leeds United and Burnley striker, said to have been
denied a clear penalty a few minutes earlier,
claimed that it had simply fallen by the wayside – and for
protesting too much, saw red.
The Northern Echo called it a tragedy, which may have been a
little over the top
but Richard Holt, the Conservative M.P. for Langbaurgh, used
parliamentary privilege to go further.
Officially the debate was on football identity cards but Holt
went in over the ball.
The cup tie was his first match for several years.
Guisborough, he said, had been “cheated by biased refereeing.”
Fitzharris, he added, should have been hounded out of the
ground.
The back benches bayed, Holt havered. “Before you, Mr. Speaker,
do as the silly referee did on Saturday by giving the red card
to the captain of Guisborough
so that ten amateurs had to play against 11 professionals, I
will resume my seat.”
Richard Holt died in office in 1991.

Alan Porter - refereed non-League Wimbledon v 1st Div
Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in Jan 1977, although Dennis Turner
is shown as refereeing the replay.
Alan Porter was in charge of the Middlesbrough v Wycombe F.A.
Cup 74-5 games, Dennis Turner did the Middlesbrough v Wimbledon
F.A. Cup games in 76-7

Ian Hendrick - I believe he was in charge of Oldham 3 Man Utd 6
in Div 1 in 1991/2.
4 Div 1 matches for Hendrick from Preston (two in 90-1 and two
in 91-2) the last of which was the above on Christmas Day 1991

John Ireland from Warrington on F.L. list 86-7 & 87-8
Some sources list him as FIFA for the same period but that seems
less likely

Bill Flood of Stockport was the referee of Blackburn v Wolves
14th April 1992
Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish was charged for making improper
comments to Flood after his teams home defeat

Wasn't he more commonly known as Allan Flood?
I saw him referee an excellent 2-1 win for Rochdale over Preston
in February 1994, as seen here:

Whoops, senior moment, Wycombe rather than Wimbledon, thank you
JT.
Tony Fitzharris - I think part of the problem was that he came
from Bolton, close to Bury, and this had already been picked up
by the NE media in days when geography was regarded as more far
more important than now. In this appointment, Tony was seen as
being set up for a fall, which duly happened.
Oldham 3 Man Utd 6 - Boxing Day, games on Christmas Day having
finished in England in the (?) 1960s.

TVOS - gosh, how old was the lino on the left at Halifax? He
looks like Mrs AT's 19 year old grandson looks now! And did he
go further in his refereeing career? I have no idea who he could
be.
