As a Man Utd fan, i'm happy Arsenal's goal was disallowed but
looking at it from a neutral perspective, i do think that it was
very harsh to disallow it as in real time i didn't think it was
a foul and even on the replay i still wasn't convinced it was a
foul. However, i thought Paul Tierney had one of his better
games and he can be pleased with his performance overall.

I am worried on two fronts:
1. The foul that VAR took several minutes to identify should
have been picked up by the referee. Another SG1 official unable
or too afraid to make a decision that would have been his bread
and butter before VAR muddied the waters.
2. With his new (lack of) hairstyle Paul Tierney looks
suspiciously like Iain Duncan-Smith.
Perhaps the two are in some way connected?

I have an issue with the disallowed goal for two reasons; most
definitely not “clear and obvious” , so should be outside the
scope of VAR under PGMOL’s guidelines. And also, what happened
to the higher physicality threshold that was briefed to the
media at the start of the season? Has that now gone out the
window? Are there different physicality rules for normal play vs
those that lead to goals? Are they panicking after what happened
yesterday? Either way, it’s a total mess. Can Webb start
tomorrow to try and sort this out?

For me, it’s a clear foul, particularly given the way Tierney
was refereeing the game. Similar incidents, particularly the
ones on arsenal players, were being given. However, is it clear
and obvious? Not sure it is. I agree with the poster above that
VAR shouldn’t be getting involved unless it’s in the penalty
box. Surprised no action taken against the arsenal player for
the foul on the build up to united’s first goal.
Tierney is weak. Doesn’t deal with dissent, and has no rapport
with the players. Should have taken action against the arsenal
players for trying to influence him when he went to the monitor.
Also, a lot of times Jesus doesn’t look at the ball but plays
the man but only 1 free kick given to United in the second half.
Not convinced by Tierney as an elite referee I’m afraid

I do think there is a danger of posters going too far the other
way. After all, the common complaint in PL has been that the bar
for VAR intervention is too high and the VAR doesn't get
involved when they really should.
If you think it was a clear foul then I think you could
reasonably say it's a clear and obvious error not to give a
foul.
And certainly VAR protocol allows fouls to be given at any point
in the APP even if outside the penalty area and we've certainly
seen that applied outside England. Again, a regular complaint is
about the PL deviating too much from rest of world so I think we
have to be a little careful about what we wish for.

I agree with a lot of the different views of todays game.
I was watching NBC coverage today, and they made a valid point
that if Tierney gives a
Foul nobody complains because he was 8-10 yards away with a
clear unobstructed view but he doesn’t give
It, so Mr Mason in VAR needs to decide if he needs to get
involved, he decides yes - and there is the problem Today
Under the new PL guidelines that challenge was a “soft foul” not
one Tierney gave so Mason should of backed out.
Lots of dissent going on, and only 1 yellow “Jesus” when it was
3-1 but he allowed so much constant dissent was not good for the
image of the PL again, the image of the PL across the world is
becoming shameful, surely time refs start to get stricter !
Because we heading towards a rapid decline now with our
officiating.
Tierney in general did ok; but it was hard to have confidence in
his decision making as he looked really weak at times:

Believe me,I think it’s incredibly soft, but Tierney made a rod
for his own back by giving every little petty soft foul in the
first half. So for consistency reasons only, he had to give that
as a foul

Why is it soft? The Arsenal player played the man not the ball.

Starting this off reiterating that I'm an Arsenal fan
I thought Tierney was really good yesterday, one of his better
performances, considering I was dreading the combination of him
and Mason for this game. But Mason of course had to continue the
poor weekend of VAR decisions. Tierney took so long once looking
at the "foul", clearly means it's not a foul. Like others have
said, never a foul anywhere else on the pitch so why now. I
might be shot down for this but I don't think that is being
overturned if the other way round. (not that I expect it to be
but consistency is shocking)
To round up, Mason poor as always, but surprisingly impressed
with Tierney with a great advantage for a united goal.
