Is it at all possible that this could (should?) have been rubbed
off for dangerous play?

It’s not often an offside takes that long to be looked at and at
the end the referee is asked to take a look. On this occasion,
we should actually by praising the process, rather than looking
to just criticise for criticising sake - but this is often the
way..
There was clearly an issue with getting the angle. It was
actually commented on SKY that they could hear due to the setup
of players the lines were not able to be placed as they’d like.
This is a limitation, as BMB as pointed out, with the
technology. But hey! Let’s blame the officials for that as well
whilst we’re at it!
Once the lines were placed the offside was clear and then it was
a subjective decision that appeared to need a discussion and a
view point from Tony Harrington.
We have been encouraging on this site for referees to be taking
more control of the decisions at the screen and this is what
happened here.
Do we want 4 minute delays for a review? No. But this wasn’t a
straight forward yes or no and I therefore can see and
understand why. It was brilliant team work from what I could see
and after the weekend of reviews, some of which were truly
shocking - this is not one of them.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions on games, referees and
decisions. But goodness me, can we not view decisions
subjectively instead of having a clear agenda against officials
and wanting to criticise.
