SIX PL games this afternoon have attracted new threads. This
must be a record for this site for such an occurrence!?

Said this last week - VAR in England is being made to look far
more technical / complicated than it is. Really simple and needs
to go back to basics - has the referee made a CLEAR error? Not a
subjective decision or one which could possibly be given
differently, but an OBVIOUS mistake. Far too many times the ref
has been called to the screen when the VAR should have stayed
out of it. I just don’t see why they are finding it so hard?!

far less physical, thus it should be easier to officiate,
however, a lot of fans to whiom I speak throughout the country
moan like mad about VAR and the officials.

some do and some don't, however, they pay a lot of money and
have to endure thte constant changes which are made to TLOG each
season but which don't make the game any better as a spectator
sport.

'perfect spectacle' however, they need to have a good look at
just what has been happening in the last 31 years instead of
trying to make it a digital festival. It is a simple game which
is being made more complicated by needless meddling.

You could certainly envisage a scenario where Mike Riley gives
out such an instruction tomorrow, only for us to then be in a
position in the next few weeks where it has gone too far the
other way and clear offences are being missed and people are
saying the PL bar is too high again.
Indeed I wouldn't be surprised if the SG1 refs have recently
been told that a perceived foul on a goalkeeper was missed in
the build-up to a goal, perhaps Arsenal V Villa in the week or
whatever, and they have over-compensated for that with some of
the decisions this weekend.

Salisbury stitched up at Newcastle
Madley should have been stronger at Chelsea
Oliver spot on at Forest
Jones should have been asked to look at 2nd penalty, can
understand Leeds' manager's frustrations
No blame on Hooper, poor decision by Holmes.

Hi all, I’m a long time reader of these boards, which I’ve
always found very interesting, but this is my first post. I have
no background in refereeing so my thoughts are those of a fan,
but a fan who tries to have an understanding of the laws of the
game and a fan who is sympathetic to referees as I understand
how hard the job is.
I was excited about the introduction of VAR and liked the
concept of clearing up clear and obvious errors. In my perhaps
overly simplistic interpretation that meant the opportunity for
a referee to review their decision where the VAR considered it
to be wrong in law. I guess it’s an inherent problem in
involving humans in any decision making process that they will
take different views, but surely a group of people who all
receive the same training and work to the same laws should
broadly come to similar decisions.
I agree with other posters that the VARs are getting involved
too much. The Newcastle and West Ham disallowed goals yesterday
are both, in my eyes, perfectly good goals, both initially
allowed by the on field referees and wrongly disallowed when
they didn’t have the courage old their convictions to stick with
their decisions following interference by colleagues who had no
reason to get involved. In the Newcastle example, both Kieran
Trippier and Eddie Howe conducted themselves tremendously,
Trippier in the marshalling of his colleagues away from the
referee and Howe in an almost calm acceptance with minimal
criticism after the game, perhaps ground down by the sheer
amount of dubious calls he’s been on the end of since taking the
job less than 12 months ago. The reaction of Rice and Moyes is
perhaps more understandable, if not acceptable, in being
obviously upset by being on the wrong end of something which is
just plainly wrong. No doubt both will be punished for their
comments, but what of Madley and Gillett? I suspect both will be
back out either refereeing or behind the cameras next week along
with Mason and Salisbury. I’d hope that all four will receive
some additional coaching and perhaps stern words over the coming
week as I would if I made such an error in my job.
That said, what we don’t know and never hear is whether Mike
Riley and his subordinates are actually happy with the way
things are being done. Maybe this is exactly what the referees
are being told to do? One poster above suggested that the
Arsenal v Aston Villa game in midweek was one where Ramsdale was
fouled in the build up to a goal. Are we possibly in a situation
where Riley and co are so reactive to previous incidents that
it’s a case of, “right then guys, if anyone goes within 2 metres
of a goalkeeper next week, give a foul, best be safe and not
take any risks”?
As someone who loves the game and has watched for years, the
latter point is arguably the most frustrating of all. I try to
keep up with a basic understanding of the laws but without
getting into Mike Riley’s head, I have no idea whether the guys
on the pitch and behind the cameras are making a mess of things,
or whether they’re just doing what they’re told.
Hopefully Howard Webb will improve things by at least improving
people’s understanding of what the referees are being asked to
do, because at present, it’s genuinely hard to know what the
outcome will be in many situations.

Well done Boggle. Thanks for taking the time to tell us your
thoughts and confirming that you, as a fan, are wondering just
what the hell is going on with our wonderful game, particularly
at the top level.
There is no simple solution which would be acceptable to those
running the game so, sadly, we shall just have to get used to
blundering on from one week to the next. C'est la vie!

Bill Shankly is quoted as saying "Football is a simple game made
complicated by people who should know better." Sums it all up
perfectly.

It would've been 7 threads but there's no point as it was Stuart
Atwell and his errors were quite minor in comparison to the VAR
errors and we were doomed anyway as have a shocking record when
he's in charge

Breaking news on the BBC - Premier League are going to review
the operation of VAR with PGMOL as a matter of priority.
