This weekend and VAR

It’s been a dreadful weekend for the majority of todays games in
the PL.
Why on earth have we had a weekend like this. VAR has been
hopeless and the only official to come out of this weekend with
any credit is Michael Oliver who told VAR to foxtrot Oscar and
stuck by his decision (I’ve yet to see the incident in question
however).
I’m not surprised we have had a car crash of a weekend from at
least five officiating teams, it was going to happen in my mind.

I commented on the VAR thread mate utter shambles with VAR
today and I voiced my opinion in a restrained way

What a dreadful day for VAR, referees and linesman,
embarrassing. Glad that Oliver is showing he is in charge not
someone 300 miles away in Shockley park.
This new directive to let things go and not blow the whistle is
causing havoc. The games are now so inconsistent with players
and referees not knowing what foul is now. Consistency has gone
out the water. Random decisions are free kicks then some thing
was more deserving of a foul is completely ignored.
That’s before it goes to Shockley park and some other referee
thinks he needs to get involved to give a free kick for which an
identical thing has happened 15 times in the match and been
ignored.
Don’t worry though we only have Tierney on the big game tomorrow
who never has controversial decisions in big games😛 and
Lee Mason on VAR who didn’t cover himself in glory today.

Are they doing an exchange in Hungary then? Only big game
tomorrow is the eternal derbi - Újpest v Fradi! [emoji1]

Are any of the PL referees that could at least score a 5 on VAR
duties ? 1 being very poor and 10 being excellent I’m not
talking about today I’m talking about in general ?

Pretty poor stuff all round today from the officiating teams,
lurching from one disaster to another.
Newcastle v C Palace, Newcastle player clearly pushed into
goalkeeper by Palace player. Goal scored and should have stood.
VAR totally wrong (Lee Mason, need I say more) and Michael
Salisbury showing his inexperience by not sticking with his
original call.
Chelsea v West Ham, Bowen makes no contact with goalkeeper.
Jarred Gillett wrong to intervene, and Andy Madley ditto as
Michael Salisbury.
Brentford v Leeds, I have to say that was a foul
on Toney and a penalty, just from one look. It seemed a correct
decision from VAR David Coote and referee Robert Jones.
Now the PGMOL have a problem here. They have lost four very
experienced referees in one fell swoop and are now putting some
of their lesser lights into the spotlight and it’s not a good
look, if I’m being honest.
There will be a lot of inquests going on on Monday to see how
they can recover from what was a shambles of a day of
officiating. What I’d like to see is on field decisions standing
unless it’s a very obvious error. We are seeing too much
intervention from VARs and not trusting their colleagues on
field calls. VAR is a blight on the game and needs to be either
further refined or binned altogether.

England generally does alright, he just takes too long. Attwell
is decent at times. Kavanagh is alright but has howlers
sometimes

It all started in 1991 with the introduction of the fourth
official who, I am sure was put in place to be the rubbing rag
for rival managers and benches ----they must have a constant
earache these days.
We used to have 22 players in matches officiated by three people
in a physical game which was enjoyed by most fans who would then
dicuss the merits of the said game and its officiating.
We now have a game with 40 players, any of whom could be
involved in the game up to a maximum of 32 and the game is
officiated by 4 onfield officials and 2 VAR people. The game is
far less physical, thus it should be easier to officiate,
however, a lot of fans to whiom I speak throughout the country
moan like mad about VAR and the officials.
I am straight with them and ask them if they enjoy the game,
some do and some don't, however, they pay a lot of money and
have to endure thte constant changes which are made to TLOG each
season but which don't make the game any better as a spectator
sport.
Those running the game seem intent on trying to make it a
'perfect spectacle' however, they need to have a good look at
just what has been happening in the last 31 years instead of
trying to make it a digital festival. It is a simple game which
is being made more complicated by needless meddling.

We need Webb to arrive ASAP! Hopefully, he'll bring a fresh
approach to VAR where referees aren't pressured to going along
with the VAR decision and they can make their own minds up.

The last line is a different perspective to that often voiced,
which is that the bar for intervention is far too high in
England.
I do think the general unwillingness by referees to stick with
their on-field decision is a problem. It should be an extra
safety net for when VAR wrongly gets involved. To that end, it
was good that Michael Oliver at least reminded everyone it could
be done.
