Newcastle were wasting time and feigning injury from the start.
It was poetic justice that the winner came in time added for a
pathetic attempt by Pope pretending he was injured. There
wouldn’t have been a minimum five minutes (which didn’t match
the time they wasted) or additional time on top without their
antics in stoppage time.
I thought Marriner was poor tonight. There’s nothing to be
gained from pointing at your watch from about five minutes then
not taking any action for continued delays to restarts, bogus
injuries and blatant time wasting. His foul detection was
erratic and persistent infringement by Joelinton wasn’t dealt
with.
His body language gave the impression that he didn’t really want
to be there. I’ve always thought he’s a good referee but he was
poor tonight.

Wasn't a long stoppage though, Physio never came on

The physio was on when Pope was “injured” in stoppage time.

Sadly a very poor performance from Andre Marriner. His foul
detection from start to finish was suspect to say the least.
His yellow cards were inconsistent. Trent should have been
cautioned and so should have Joe Gomez. He didn’t keep up with
play at times and I have no idea where he got three added
minutes added from the five.
7.9/10

Pope was down for some time. The camera didn’t dwell on him too
long, but it took an age to restart.
Newcastle then has a break in 95, and didn’t run it to the
corner. Liverpool countered and got two corners, and scored in
97.xx
The extra minute or so was the celebrations and the time taken
to restart the match. The five minutes is neither here nor
there, but an extra two minutes and a few seconds to allow the
corner to be taken was absolutely fine given the delay for
injury.

Pope was not pretending to be injured at all. He suffered a very
serious shoulder injury when he was at Burnley and was out for a
long time. Anyone who has suffered shoulder injuries knows that
they can easily dislocate and this was the area that they were
treating. ANy shoulder injury will always be a worry for a
keeper because of the nature of the game, in fact, the previous
night, Muric, the Burnley keeper. injured his shoulder during
the first half of the match and had to be substituted in the
68th minute because he was unable to do his job properly.
The players going down with 'cramp' were definitely trying to
waste time and it backfired. Having said that, just how long
does it take to take a throw in? Both teams wasted so much time
right from the start of the game, even with the multi-ball
systme in use.

Watched it this morning, only watched from 88+ plus knowing what
was to come so can't comment on iother timewasting before- From
the moment Pope went down to the time play restatrted was 85
seconds, and apart from that additional time ran smooth, for me
the time for the final whistle was when Liverpool brought the
ball clear from their own penalty area when stopping the
Newcastle attack, middle of the pitch at about 96:40 - for
whatever reason he allows Liverpool to break back, win the
corner and then score from it. Small error with big consequences
Haven't Marriner and Liverpool got previous for late goals? Sure
it was he who gave them the late penalty at the Emirates that
was scored in 102nd minute - and I'm pretty sure the board for
that one was definitly less than 12

Thats why we need timekeepers as all referees allow free kicks /
corners to be taken then immediately blow once it is cleared
that clearly tell us all they are making it up.
If the time is up the time is up.
I know why they do it beacuse they would get grief but when it
results in a goal it reflects very badly, and could cost the
team dearly.

Yes, let's have an independent timekeeper, a sound goes to make
everyone aware time is up and then the full time whistle gets
blown next time the ball is legitimately put out of play for a
goal kick, corner or throw in.
How hard can it be to implement something like that? it seems to
work well in Rugby.
Why not use a lesser competition as something of a trial for
it....EFL Trophy perhaps?

I have no problem with a referee playing over the allotted time.
It’s a min of x mins after all.
I think the biggest travesty in this game is the disallowed goal
for Newcastle which looks like it was probably onside looking at
the still frame with the lines.

Re the disallowed Isak goal. Whatever happened to
the ruling from last year that the striker should get the
benefit of the doubt? Isak scored with his foot which was
clearly behind the defender. Why should the position of his head
be relevant?
