Peter Bankes- West Ham v Spurs.

Can see why he gave the penalty as Cresswell's arm out stretched
and in real time looked like it his forearm first and took Mr
Attwell in the VAR booth 4.5 minutes to send him to the monitor
so is that clear and obvious?
My one compliant about tonight. Timekeeping!! Over 4 minutes for
the VAR incident plus a couple of other stoppages and yet only 4
minutes added time shown. Not good in that aspect.

Agree with poster. For me it’s a penalty, no thin natural
position. Look at reaction of West Ham players, none of them
even appealed against. The time Attwell spent looking at it was
nothing short of a disgrace.
Had my doubts with Bankes on this game and I never once had
confidence he was in control, and game was always on edge. For
me he doesn’t have the personality or temperament to officiate a
match of such magnitude

Anyone refereeing Spurs these days will always have problems
with the Spurs number 10 who always tries to referee the game!

It's hard to judge a referee's temperament and personality
without either having met them or experienced at first had their
officiating. A perceived demeanour is simply that, a perception.

Not a penalty in a million years.. Kane heads the ball onto
Cresswell’s head and onto his head.. more poor decision making
from Mr Bankes who doesn’t deserve a UEFA badge.

Completely agree. Annoys me no end when people assume their
personal perception of a referee they have never met translates
to what they are like as a person, 9.9/10 they are way off base
as well. [emoji57]

Indeed that is true. He could be the most wonderful guy in the
world. But I have watched him referee many times and my
judgement of him is that he is an average referee. Fails to
control games properly, doesn’t recognise clear sanctions as
well.

I think that is a perfectly reasonable position to hold,
especially if it can be backed up by evidence of failure of
control and the improper use of sanctions.
However, that is a very different thing from then going on to
comment on a referee's temperament and personality unless of
course one has experienced those things first hand. In my time I
have known referees who looked the 'cock of the walk' when they
were officiating but their personality was actually rather
gently humorous and quite humble. Conversely there was once a
League referee who always looked rather timid out on the pitch
but off it he tended to dominate conversations in quite an
overbearing manner at times.

Indeed, it is a sensitive soul. I had a similar problem when
referring to the horse to be ridden to Banbury Cross. What
apparent filth we teach to children in nursery rhymes!
