Gavin Ward - Sheffield United vs Reading

In what was a really easy game to referee I have never seen so
many obvious fouls go unchallenged.
If this was intentional then it’s an excellent performance from
Mr Ward. If it was unintentional, and he just missed the
decisions, then it’s the most inept display I’ve seen in a long
time.
Either way though it made for a refreshingly physical game, with
the ball in play and stoppages and disruptions kept to a
minimum. And he was consistent to both teams, so no complaints
at all.
Unfortunately we have Matt Donohue at the weekend… so the exact
opposite can be expected. Seems to have an absolute shocker
every time I see him take charge of a game.

A clean slate for Ward last night so, for me it was probably
unintentional

That is very typical gavin ward , let’s the game flow I always
enjoy his displays at home park as he lets them get on with it ,
gets a right bad press on here which I believe is totally
undeserving, he’s a damn sight better than most and very humble
with it.

If the unpunished fouls were that obvious, then I'm not sure if
missing them could be described as excellent, whether
intentional or not.

Not every foul needs to be punished. Sometimes it’s better for
the game, the spectacle and the players to use a dose of common
sense if applicable.
The game flowed really well, due to Ward’s lack of involvement
when he could have quite easily have turned it into a stop start
bore fest.
Whether that is due to good game management or total ineptitude
however is up for debate.

There is a difference between every challenge not resulting in a
free kick and every foul. If Ward perceived that they were good
challenges and did not merit penalising then this is good
refereeing. If there were fouls that enabled him to.play good
advantages from, this is also good refereeing.
If he was ignoring fouls "for the good of the game" this is not
so good.

All very true, however, wasn't he lucky that he didn't have to
contend with VAR as well.

Well, quite.
I certainly agree that not every minor piece of contact is a
foul and there are plenty of perfectly good challenges/tackles
where play can continue.
But I don't think ignoring multiple obvious fouls can be
considered good refereeing in any way - otherwise, who is to say
which obvious fouls it is acceptable to let go and which ones
should be punished?
