J GILLETT - Arsenal v Fulham

Not too bad from Gillett in the first half, however why Palhinha
was carded after Jesus squared up to him was puzzling, and the
foul wasn’t deserving of a card.
Other than that, a steady performance thus far.

A much better performance from Jarred. His foul detection was
pretty good and he didn't stand for any nonsense by both sets of
players. Good decision by VAR to award Arsenal's second goal as
there was no handball from Gabriel.

A rumbustious, exciting and enthralling match. Generally I
thought Gillett was more in control of the game today than last
Sunday at Newcastle. A lot more consistent with his decisions
and looked more authoritative also.
Fulham manager Silva unhappy at the end, and I can’t understand
why. The Arsenal winner was checked for a possible infringement,
but it was given on field and confirmed by VAR.
Silva was cautioned for taking his complaints too far and five
players were also cautioned…it’s good to see referees clamping
down on dissent. Gillett is finding his competence being
questioned a lot more readily now he’s established but he was in
charge today and controlled the game pretty reasonably.
Any thoughts from our other esteemed Fulham correspondents?

I felt like he wasn't as quick to give free kicks this week, and
I can't think of much he got wrong at all, maybe the Palhinha
yellow card was harsh, but that's about it. He dealt with the
potential flare ups very well, and was pleased to see a yellow
card for dissent given.

I think the VAR check did exclude any infringement by Saliba on
Leno who possibly cleaned him out but VAR was looking at the
handball instead. Can VAR look at two incidents literally in the
same moment?
I was always happy when Gillett was appointed in the
championship and he continues to impress.
As said earlier, only the Palhinha yellow was harsh, but he was
good from start to finish.

I rate Gillett very highly and that hasn't changed. Only
(slight) gripes are as others have said about the YC for
Paulinha, and also he didn't add enough time at the end for the
additional injury/timewasting/sub.

Agreed with everyone here, steady performance, didn’t get
anything wrong.
Good good yellow for dissent to the Fulham player, told him
firmly to back off and move didn’t do it carried on talking so
got the yellow - would like to see all of Gillett fellow PL
officials take suit - 1 warning then bang card for dissent !!
I think he did Pauliho because it was a confrontation with Jesus
and Paulinho and it easier to caution 1 each than just 1 player
in that type of incident.

They look at everything so if there was foul (or a handball) in
the build up & an offside they would both be looked at and then
if applicable the order would be determined for deciding what
action would be taken eg. foul occurs after an offside then the
offside will be the thing deal with and vice versa. In the case
of 2 fouls the first would be dealt with (unless the on field
ref had seen it and played an advantage).

I totally agree with Observeref8. In a flare up involving
players from both sides it is a good idea to pick one from each
side so that no side feel as though they are particularly being
hard done by. Often happens in rugby, not necessarily by using
cards but you speak to both props for example in a even way
although it may be the case than one is clearly having issues.
Of course it can blow in your face if a second yellow has to be
issued but you hope that the player realises they are on a
yellow and behaves. Then again, we are talking about
footballers!
