Not the easiest of afternoons for Jarred Gillett. It’s a shame
because he wasn’t doing too badly up until the Trippier sending
off which was rightly rescinded, in my view.
Normally, his decision making is good and he makes them quickly,
leaving no room for argument.
On this occasion, from his viewpoint, Trippier’s challenge was a
high one, and dangerous. The first point is true, but not the
second. It is not endangering the safety of an opponent but is a
cynical foul that should have merited a yellow card like the
other sanctions Gillett dished out.
I’ve watched Gillett several times and have been impressed each
time. One indifferent match does not make a bad referee, and
people should not be quick to jump on the “he’s a crap referee
and should be sacked” bandwagon we hear every time from the
Twitter peabrains when an official doesn’t perform up to
standard.
As I said, it’s a shame that rescinded red card will be talked
about but the VAR correctly intervened and it is no disgrace in
admitting a mistake has been made in the first place.
Gillett will sit down and analyse his display with the powers
that be and think he could have done better in a few situations.
It wasn’t great but I’ve seen a lot worse and that’s the most
indifferent display I’ve seen from him so far. He is a top
referee and will bounce back.

1) finally the confirmation bias of a four-and-a-half minute
YouTube video begins to run out
2) someone really must explain to Mr Bankes what an SFP is
(clue: it doesn't have to result in a broken leg to be a red
card)
3) what a spectacular game!! WOW.

Forgetting about Jarred, that was one of the best Premier League
matches I've watched for ages - both sides played some excellent
football. Newcastle fans should be excited about this season
based on that performance.

I feel for Gillett as in almost any other country that is a red
card. The ball was nowhere near, it wasn't a tackle as a tackle
is defined as a challenge for the ball, this was purely and
simply kicking an opponent and he was absolutely correct with
the red card. He certainly wasn't clearly and obviously wrong.
And it was obvious from how long he looked at it and his body
language after that he didn't want to change his mind, but knew
he would be in hot water with his bosses if he didn't.

We've all had our fair share of bad days at the office - for
most of though we don't have an audience of tens/hundreds of
thousands watching us when we do. I'm sure he will learn from it
& kick on, he's a decent referee.

I'm going to sit on the fence and say the Trippier challenge was
of the fictitious 'orange' category, rather like Gillett's shirt
appeared on my screen. It was high & cynical but I would
question whether it was dangerous and it did not appear to be
with excessive force. I was therefore slightly, but not very,
surprised that VAR recommended an OFR.

Not sure about the 1st Newcastle goal as the replay is unclear
and wasn't watching the game live at this point. With regards to
the red card, i can see why Jarred gave it as he probably
thought Trippier had gone in with his studs but as the replay
shows he catches him with his boot and not his studs so the VAR
was correct to intervene. I do agree that his foul detection
wasn't great from what i did watch but he is better than quite a
few of the referees that we have had over the years so i'm
pretty confident that he will learn from this and be better in
his next match.

I think this is the problem. It was a nasty, cynical foul, the
sort where it's easy for a supporter to think "he should be sent
off for that". But if it wasn't studs showing, did it tick the
boxes for endangering an opponent or excessive force? On the
other hand, if the "dangerous" aspect was subjective, and with a
high bar set, was it a clear and obvious error? Will continue
to sit uncomfortably on the fence and await to see Dermot's
verdict tomorrow.

Play it through logically. Was it a tackle? No, as the law
defines a tackle as a challenge for the ball with the foot. Now
not even the most ardent of Newcastle fans could claim that
Tripper was trying to get the ball, and he admitted as much in
the post match interview. So if it isn't a tackle what is it? It
can only be kicking an opponent, and that is violent conduct.
