Where did I blame the Paul Tierney? And I did say that I agree
it was a red. Just that I think mitrovic also should have gone.

That comment was more directed to the fact he gave a free kick,
booked someone else for dissent then made an offside signal as
he ran off.

Now that the dust has settled is it time to consider if an SG1
referee should not have seen the danger signs and provocation
before it exploded. I used to find that a quiet word with the
players and their respective captains would generally nip the
problem in the bud. No criticism of the decision to send off,
but it may have been avoidable.

No chance, it happened way too quickly. Yes, they had been
digging away at each other all game, but that is normal between
defenders and strikers. Absolutely nothing the officials could
do about that.

The main way it was avoidable was presumably for the Liverpool
player not to commit violent conduct. I think the players
generally need to take the blame in such instances rather than
the match officials. It is the players who fundamentally need to
take responsibility for keeping control of their emotions and
actions.

Most definitely agreed. The case for a referee "getting a
bigger grip" is defensible when the atmosphere of a game is
increasing, and a tackle/elbow [insert incident here] becomes
increasingly likely from anywhere on the pitch. When two adult
men are pushing each other around, it is incumbent on them,
their team mates, and their managers to ensure that is stays the
right side of the Law.
Beyond that, even if Nunez didn't commit VC, his manager/captain
needed to get him sorted as Anderson had him worked up.
Irrespective of any refereeing decision, he was becoming less
effective as a footballer because of it.
