I have only just caught up with this sad news. Along with
Darrell Hair he was the first umpire I saw at a cricket match
that I attended.
Some lovely tributes today from players that he umpired.

Sad to hear of his death.
I think he was one of the true characters of the umpiring world
with his "finger of death". I remember him in the 05 Ashes.
Strong umpire.

I genuinely missed this post.
Certainly one of the best umpires around and that slow finger of
death as mentioned above was masterful. The moment the tv camera
went onto Rudi and the tension on whether the finger was going
up epitomised drama.
Other umpires have or had unique signalling techniques, namely
Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan (that’s fun to pronounce) and
or course William Bowden, but his was the deadliest!
