Hockey Umpiring

First to admit, don't know the rules, but what a joy to watch,
being able to hear their decisions, the players accepting
decisions, no play acting, no timewasting. no stopping
freekicks. Credit to them and certainly football should take
note.

2 or 3 times the video reviews have taken an age. As with most
competitions as it has got to the business end more decisions
are questioned, intensity in SFs was quite something. Very
enjoyable to watch

Now that we have finished with the Men's Football World Cup and
the Rugby League Wrold Cup from 2022 and looking forward to the
Women's Football, Rugby Union and Cricket World Cups later in
2023, one might take time to watch the Men's Hockey World Cup
which started today in India and where England and Wales (for
the first time) are taking part.
It's being shown on BT Sport which I don't take, so I shall miss
it but others may enjoy and compare the officiating, and as a
result the way the game is played, with the football.
Two umpires miked up to communicate with each other and the
Video Official, and usually to be heard by the crowd and the TV
audience.
2 (I think) team referrals to the Video umpire for decsions in
the shooting circle.
Green card 2 minute temporary suspension: Yellow card Temporary
suspension minimum 5 minutes at the discretion of the umpire.
No offside.
Self -pass from free hits(kicks) - the person taking can take
the hit to himself. Speeds the game up no end.
There is very little dissent becuase if player is talking to
the umpire, he is not involved in the game adn the ball is
probaly 30 - 50 yards away and in your circle/goal!! And you
don't play the ball within 5 (not10) metres of a free hit
because if you do you go and sit down for 2 or 5 minutes.
