Bradford City vs. Doncaster Rovers, Robert Madden

Tough debut in our leagues for the experienced Scottish referee
it seems:

Don't follow EFL so closely, but to me it seems like games at
Valley Parade often become very challenging due to intense
atmosphere there. Easy to be wise after the event of course, but
to send Madden there for his first competitive game seems a very
naive choice by M. Jones (is him who does L1/L2 appmnts,
right?).

He's refereed Old Firm games, hasn't he, and Panathinaikos v
Olympiakos (according to Soccerbase!!), so Bradford City v
Doncaster Rovers is well within his capabilities.

More importantly what idiotic behaviour from Lee Tomlin...

Sure! He was very well regarded too for his performances in the
Greek derbies iirc (edy?).
But yet...

Maybe just me, and I know the Bradford player took a bad one in
the first incident, but I don't think he got much wrong there.

I would hardly call it naive to appoint someone with his
experience to any game in the EFL to be honest. It’s good to see
someone address pathetic behaviour and for me he was 100% spot
on.

Well done to Bobby Madden for not putting up with Lee Tomlin's
pathetic behaviour. If he keeps that level of performance up
he'll be in the premier league within the next 3-4 years

As he has moved south for work reasons, one would assume that
his football has taken on more of a well paid hobby role.
I cannot imagine, although I dont know him personally, that he
has moved with the intention of giving that job up to join SG2
for a finite length of time

But yet what? Seems to me you're creating an issue where there
isn't one.

I think I can see Mikael’s point. Regardless of his vast
experience I think it does make sense to start any referee
moving to a new league with an easy game (on paper!). I accept
that of course every game at this level could be seen as ‘easy’
for an official of Madden’s experience, nonetheless there has
been media attention over his arrival and given he is an unknown
quantity to most in the English game I assume he would rather
avoid headlines in his first few games as he builds his
reputation in England.
Saying that - my personal opinion would be that Madden would be
a fantastic addition to SG1 and could in time take charge of top
EPL clashes, work commitments might prevent that though. But I
do see the logic to a slow start in any case.
Excellent call on the second YC in clip 2. He sold it really
well, showed empathy by not giving a second yellow card for
kicking the ball away after he had just been cautioned but the
correctly issued it when that was thrown back in his face by a
ridiculous act of simulation. I accept though, when very close
by it can be easy to misinterpret things and fall for the dive.
Great refereeing. Look forward to seeing more of Madden.
