Officials pay

In reading the Bobby Madden thread, it got me wondering why he
wouldn't want to go FT. Is SG2 pay not great?
What are the salary (+match fee) bands for SG1 / SG2 / NL /
Conference for referees and assistants?
Surely there is enough money in the game to pay these people
properly? Never understood why NL refs are not FT.

I wouldn’t have thought there was anywhere near enough money to
pay NL or L1/L2 refs enough for full time.
Remember, it’s not just a case of paying a competitive salary
versus what anyone can get elsewhere, it has to also account for
what is a job that will end in most people’s 40s. Just look at
how hard it is for footballers to move on after a career - it
has to be just as hard (perhaps even harder) for referees.
In short, it’s completely unaffordable, and dare say, I doubt
there’s much interest from officials that level at going FT?
Their respect primary employment salaries plus match fees
probably dwarf what they’d get as a FT official, and they’d have
to prepare for retirement…
It comes back to that question that isn’t asked enough when
discussed in Scotland - what’s the desire for FT officials, and
would the costs (even if affordable) actually solve the
perceived issues?
It’s no doubt a good debate to be had, and I wonder if my
position is consistent with what others think.

I doubt the desire is there on part of the authorities let alone
the lower league referees. Compare what SG1 refs get paid -
£70k/year to what PL players get paid £30+k/week and SG2 refs -
£35k/year to championship players £15/20k+/week. It's
embarrassing. Yes clubs pay the players but a lot of their
money, especially for the smaller clubs comes from TV revenue,
that TV revenue also goes in part to the PGMOL to pay the
referees. Refereeing is very much an afterthought on the part of
the authorities, a necessary evil instead of being viewed as an
integral and important part of the game, imo.

While you are of course right that the referees' pay is paltry
in comparison to players (although not paltry in comparison to
people who work a damned sight more hours per week), supporters
and sponsors don't pay to watch referees, so it's not really a
relevant comparison.

They'd have nothing to watch if it wasn't for the referees so
yes it is, imo! You can have all the best players in the world
but without a vital component in the game ie the referee all
they'd be able to do is stand there showing off balling skills
but not be able to play an actual game. They may not pay to
watch them but without them there is no game, a simple fact.

I don't disagree, but fact is, fans are paying to watch the
players. It's a completely separate argument you're discussing
and one for other authorities to sort out for their members to a
better conclusion.

Similarly there'd be no game to go to without the stewards,
safety people etc.
Footballers have to have (or should have in some cases) specific
physical skills and creativity. Referees simply have to watch
these skilful performers and adjudicate on their actions. Having
said that the gap between officials and players is too great,
players are "earning" far too much as mega-rich, usually
foreign, club owners throw obscene amounts of money around in
the, usually forlorn, quest for success.

Its all a bit chicken and egg anyway as Bobby Madden moved to
England because of his job. So if he was giving up his job he
wouldn't have moved to England at all.
There isn't the money at League 1 and 2 to have full time
referees, and I'm far from convinced the referees would want it
anyway. It would be presumably lower than the Championship
retainer, and therefore probably lower than many of them get in
their current jobs. There's also the obvious risk of quitting a
job that you might have had for years, with great job security,
for one where one or two bad performances could see you "sacked"
at the end of the season, out of work and unable to pay the
bills.

I've seen numerous instances of "one or two bad performances"
from full-time referees but don't recall too many sackings !

There have been lots of demotions over the years, but unlike
promotions, for obvious reasons, they don't publicise it.
