I find it difficult to be too concerned about any part the
stakeholders might have played in the change. I think the time
afforded to Riley has been more than generous and the position
has to be answerable to someone. Whilst I agree clubs should not
actively be controlling the organisation, I think that it is
reasonable enough that they should have some means of
expressing their displeasure if a sufficient number feel that
way.
I really hope the communication improves, including with VAR. At
the very least, I think they should start releasing audio clips
of VAR conversations like they do in MLS. If Webb helps with
that then great.
I think likes of Jones, Madley, England and Gillett are
definitely capable of being pushed further in SG1. I guess it's
a bit funny that likes of Friend and Moss have been classed as
average by some for years but the minute they are gone there is
concern about if they can be replaced.

The fact that it is going to be a split role says a lot to me. I
wonder how differently he would have been able to do his job if
he had just been allowed to get on with his job and not also
have to do the business management side of things? One of the
first things he brought in was the degree that the refs now
take, that for me is a huge positive. One thing raised on here
often about the open ended contracts is why would people retire
in terms of them being financially secure in the role. The
degree gives them added options in higher paid positions outside
of refereeing. They'll have mortgages, kids at school or uni,
like the rest of us and the size of the mortgage often depends
on your income, if you're a higher earner you're going to have a
bigger mortgage than those on a lower income, that will still
need paying and they will need a comparable wage to afford it, a
post graduate degree is invaluable to help with that. I'm sure
he's got as much right as he has wrong but a bit like a referees
performance on the day we only remember the bad bits, the poor
decisions and less so the good bits. We also know the PL has
allowed the shareholders way too much say. Let's take the whole
VAR debacle - I wonder how much the method of implementation was
down to him and how much was down to the shareholders demands?
As others have mentioned whoever takes over, and I believe the
rumours that it will be Howard Webb are very close to the mark,
they are still going to have to contend with shareholders who
are used to having way too much to say and as such will have
their hands tied to a degree. I wish him well for his future in
whatever he decides to do - if he has any sense he will get as
far away from the toxic politics involved in refereeing as
possible!

The interesting thing about the most recent post by bmb is that,
given his training as and most recent employment utilising his
qualification as an accountant, arguably the 'management role'
may have been the more apposite for Mr Riley had it been an
option at the time

Not necessarily, management is a specific skill and many
accountants will have zero management experience, certainly not
people management experience.
Its the same reason that the top professional footballers rarely
make the best managers. The best people in technical roles, for
example in my field of technology, very rarely make good people
managers. My best managers over the years have been people who
have been brought in from outside with a fresh perspective, this
long held belief that a senior referee will make a good referee
head is fundamentally flawed.
I don't blame Mike Riley, but equally I suspect he didn't have
the management skills or business / people management experience
to manage PGMOL out of the mess they found themselves in
following the VAR implementation. If someone had been in charge
who could talk to the press and explain things it might have
been a bit different, but Riley has been pretty much silent.
Likewise I can't help thinking he found it difficult dealing
with club CEOs and their representatives, again understandable
as he was an accountant and probably not used to working to
board level.

I presume these two roles would need to be formally advertised
before Webb or anyone else could be appointed?
Incidentally, has David Elleray left his FA role now and if so
has he been replaced?

Lord Elleray isn’t an FIFA observer any more but as to his FA
role, I’ve no idea.
