To be fair to Riley over the 13 years there have been a great
deal of successes:
1. Howard Webb refereeing 2010 champions league final and world
cup final in same year.
2. Mark Clattenburg refereeing the 2016 champions league final
and Euro 2016 final.
3. Only England is sending two referees to the World cup this
year
4. There are other successes such as Europa league finals,
nations league etc
It is probably time for a change. i hope Webb gives this his
full commitment - something he is not great at!!

Should have gone 3-4 years ago. 13 years is too long in a role
like that. Someone needs to come in and implement real change
starting with the hierarchy of “jobs for pals”. We also need
referees accountable for mistakes, but also rewarded for good
consistent performances. The games need to be spread around a
lot more as well. As for VAR: Has been a shambles since day 1!

Didn't those referees get those games because of their
performances in those competitions or in international/European
football?

Agreed. I’d be more tempted to say they got them DESPITE Riley
being in charge.

Hendo do you have anything positive to say about anyone in
refereeing?? For a profession that brings such negativity to you
I do wonder why you keep following it.
Mike Riley seems to be a marmite character but I don’t think
anybody could argue that it has been a vast improvement from the
days of Hackett pandering to clubs and publicly shaming his own
referees. Best wishes to Mike in whatever comes next

Regarding independence away from clubs, we cannot have a
situation leading to comments such as that would be a card in
European games or where referees and VAR see match incidents and
more importantly outcomes differently in England when compared
with incidents in international or UEFA competitions.
In the showcase Rugby Final last week, there was a clear red
card not given. Law clear. The only explanation I can give was
that the "stakeholders" did not want any controversy in a game
viewed by a record audience "spoiled" by a card for a high
tackle even if the Law says red. Barnes in lawyer speak rattled
on spouting stuff not in law with hear no evil and see no evil
watching on. At least 15 players were playing 15. Premiership
rugby happy.
On Wednesday a citation was issued on 2 counts (to satisfy world
rugby), 2 days later than usual and conveniently after everyone
had packed up for season with hearing conveniently held after
everyone has forgotten the game. It appears that leagues in
other countries are ignoring World Rugby's Laws on high tackles
too because it is "ruining" the game.
We cannot have referees and more importantly their manager's
yielding to pressure from clubs and let's face it, TV. These
changes do not satisfy these concerns.

I think the VAR fiasco in the first season was probably the time
in which he should have gone, when officials weren’t allowed to
look at the monitor and it was Shockley Park re refereeing the
game from a box rather than on a field.
I still fear for SG1 this season, four have gone and really only
England and Gillett have shown they can go very far.
The jury is still out on Salisbury and Harrington IMO.

To be fair, you can't possibly make any sort of judgement on a
referee based on 3 games across a season. There will be more
opportunities for Brooks, Salisbury and Harrington this coming
season. Gillett is clearly going to be among the elite level of
the SG1 within the next 2-3 years if he continues the level of
performances we saw in his first season. I too think Darren
England could be up there as well.
I agree with the fact that Riley should have gone after the
first season of VAR - the fact it's continued for another couple
of seasons, and it's still just as poor does not look good on
Riley at all.

I think that you are always likely to have certain differences
in refereeing between different competitions. It is not as if
UEFA and FIFA are exactly the same. The style of UEFA refereeing
has certainly shifted in the last 10 or 20 years to become a bit
less strict, whilst PL has probably become a bit stricter than
it once was.
In the last two World Cups, FIFA have adopted very lenient
policies. Offences that would routinely be yellow cards in
domestic football in England have not been sanctioned in such a
way.
But what I think you need to have is a conformity within a
certain tolerance level and a general understanding of how you
are consistently going to work. The Riley years relied too much
on situations where for instance VAR barely intervened at all on
subjective decisions in the first 8 weeks of the season and then
suddenly had about half a dozen in the next two weekends.

I find it difficult to take much pleasure in anyone losing their
job, not to be mawkish but I'm sure on a personal level this is
a difficult time for Mike Riley and his family and I can't
really rejoice in that. I'm sure though that he will be well
compensated for his years as the director general. While it is
being framed now as simply a changing of the guard in an
amicable way with all parties left happy, I think the reality is
quite clear that the stakeholders in the PGMOL have pushed Riley
out and this I really don't like. As bmb and others have said,
the PGMOL feels far from independent and in this sense it is a
sad day for refereeing.
Saying all of that I do think it is time for a change. Mike
Riley does seem to be something of a divisive character, former
referees have offered varying opinions of him in print and I
think it would be difficult to gauge on the whole whether
individual SG1 members are happy with this development or not.
Judging on policy rather than personality however I do think
there have been some significant issues in recent seasons. The
implementation of VAR with an initial reluctance to use the
pitch side monitors and the seemingly ever changing line for for
'clear and obvious'. The very conservative appointment policy
with almost no application of the performance principle with
reputation and experience seemingly far more important. I hope
if indeed Mr. Webb does take over that he will take a more
dynamic approach with a better spread of games and reward good
performances rather than an almost pre-set formulaic approach.
With the influence of the stakeholders in mind however I do
wonder if a whole lot will change. I expect some deviation with
a new management setup but I fear they will have to operate
within the lines that have been set for them, rather than draw
new lines.
