       F.A. Cup 1945-46 - Match Officials
By: John Treleven Date: June 21, 2022, 2:14 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       1945-46 Notes (1)
       Format
The matches were two legged until the Semi-Finals
There were 88 F.L. clubs (four divisions with 22 in each)
but Hull City (3N) and New Brighton (3N) did not compete
       47 clubs exempt to Round 3 - all 22 Div 1 clubs, 21 of 22 (not
       Newport Co.) Div 2 clubs
       plus Norwich C. (21st Div 2 1938-39), Crystal P. (2nd Div 3S
       1938-39),
       Chester (6th Div 3N 1938-39) and Cardiff C. (13th Div 3S
       1938-39).
Chester and Cardiff had both reached 4th Round replays in
       1938-39
They would be joined by the 17 survivors from Round 2 to form
       the last 64.
43 clubs exempt to Round 1 - 19 remaining clubs in each of Div
       3S and Div 3N plus
       Newport Co. (1st Div 3S 1938-39) and 4 non-league clubs, Bishop
       Auckland
(Amateur Cup holders), Bath City, South Liverpool and Yeovil
       Town
Yeovil Town (as Yeovil & Petters U.) had reached a 3rd Round
       replay in 1938-39
25 qualifiers would make up a total of 68 clubs in Round 1
Draws on aggregate were to play extra time of 10 (not 15)
minutes each way. If still level play on and first goal wins
       "golden goal" (G.G.)
The golden goal only "worked" on two occasions, in three others
       the matches
had to be abandoned, because of bad light, with no deciding goal
       having been scored
Lengthy ties (over 180 minutes) (inc. abandonments)
       Blackpool v Middlesbrough (4R) 381 minutes
       Nottingham F. v Watford (3R) 333 minutes
       Q.P.R. v Crystal Palace (3R) 297 minutes
       Bromley v Slough United (1R) 260 minutes
Mansfield Town v Gainsborough Trinity (1R) 210 minutes
       Bury v Sunderland (4R) 210 minutes
Preston North End v Manchester United (4R) 210 minutes
Everton v Preston North End (3R) 207 minutes
The first round was drawn in seven regional groupings, the
       second in five,
the third in four, the fourth in two, before the fifth became
       nationwide
No first or second round tie required a replay, or even extra
       time in the latter
Gateshead were drawn to play their first legs at home v
       Hartlepools U. (R1),
Darlington (R2) and Rotherham United (R3) but all were switched
       to avoid
       clashes with Newcastle United
Bromley v Slough United (R1 1st Leg) on Sat 17th Nov was
       abandoned at 2-1 after
80 minutes due to bad light as the match had started late
       following the breakdown
of the visitors coach on the way to the match, the re-match was
       played four days later
West Ham United v Chelsea first leg was due at W.H.U.
but after the crowd broke in for the last round v Arsenal
they were given time to make repairs so the first leg was played
       at Chelsea
Charlton v Bolton S-F replay would have been at Chelsea
Southport programme (R1, L1) has Duerden as the referee
but he had been transferred to the Carlisle match
