Scottish category 1 refs Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson have
revealed (as a gay man I hate the phrase “come out”) that they
are gay. I applaud them both for having the courage to do so.

Maybe following Jake Daniels and our two Scottish referees
today, this will encourage more people to be comfortable with
being themselves.
Male football might just be moving in the right direction with
regards to sexuality at long last.
Edited to add update to original story concerning Lloyd Wilson
also revealing his sexuality.

Well done to them, let's hope that this will encourage other top
flight referees and players to come out and basically say I am
what I am deal with it. Still annoys me that it is felt
necessary, heterosexual people do not have to "come out" (and
yes I hate that phrase as well) and declare they are straight so
why should homosexuals have to? Hopefully this brings us one day
closer to a better equality in that respect. As Napier said
though "I don't think this needs to be a news story but I think
at the moment, it really does because we need to see the climate
change so that people do feel that they can be their true self
and live happily and comfortable in their own skin. And then
that needs to transcend into football."
A lot of the mental health work I have done with referees
revolves around their sexuality and their fears about being
"found out" or getting a negative reaction to "coming out" -
makes me both angry and sad. I've spoken with one top flight
referee who had some vile scumbag emailing the national press in
his country in an attempt to out him, thankfully the press
contacted filed the emails in the bin and didn't go there but
why should he live under the fear of such a threat just because
he's gay?
