My concern for SG1 and SG2 is that all the newly installed
people are from the Riley crop (some were around with Hackett).
They have officiated with and alongside him and have been "led"
and "managed" by him. Who's bringing in the fresh ideas? Who's
going to drive standards up? Who is telling Riley something
needs to change?
Of all the new appointees Friend has the hardest job as a few of
SG2 should not be there and I cannot see how they can improve.

Good luck to him, but I am curious as to how many management
positions the PGMOL have, or is it a way of keeping them on the
books beacuse they cant get rid of them.

The article states it's a newly created role so take from that
what you want!
Friend will continue to work for PGMOL in the newly-created post
of manager of the “Select Group 2” referees – those who take
charge of games in the Championship.

A little surprised Friend has followed Moss, Atkinson and Dean
in retiring from on field refereeing.
Bit then again On another thread a while back i did say i wonder
if more would follow.

He's been over in the USA for a few years now, as far as I am
aware anyway!

If only it were so!
He's been back in the UK for 3 or 4 years now, coming out with
often unclear and unconvincing analysis on BT.
It often seems like he is trying to defend the PGMO but whether
that's because he has anything to do with them or he's just not
a very good TV broadcaster I'm not sure.

I’m well up to date obviously 🙄 I knew he did the
punditry but assumed he was still abroad. Mark Clattenburg does
punditry for whatever channel it is in the USA plus writes for a
UK paper whose name doesn’t warrant mentioning but he is based
in Greece so I automatically assumed Walton did it from the USA.

Kevin's last game was Brighton v West Ham on 22nd May although,
unlike Dean, Atkinson and Moss, we did not realise it at the
time. I will amend my database of final games.

One wonders if, with Bournemouth’s promotion, Friend realised he
would be spending every other Saturday at their ground as per
previous seasons and decided enough was enough!
As others have said Friend was a decent enough ref but nothing
special. To me he was lucky to have got an F A Cup Final, due in
part to the dearth of talent around, when many much better refs
in the past have never done so - Halsey, Callow, Bodenham and
others spring to mind.
On a serious note with the retirement of so many experienced
refs together it does put extra pressure on all SG1 refs who are
left, many of whom have not been given ample chance to bed in as
yet, especially in top 5 games. To me the thought of Coote on a
Manchester derby or Bankes on Arsenal v Spurs fills me with
worry. Oliver and Taylor can’t be expected to do them all.
Can I more in hope than expectation suggest this might be a good
chance to relieve some of the pressure by giving the more able
SG2 refs an occasional mid-range game

I believe a plaque in his honour should be attached to the
tunnel side of the partition surrounding the home bench "Kevin
Friend fell here"... I've already sold his personalised parking
spot!!

Well done to Kevin Friend on a very good career. I always felt
he was a very good premier league referee, maybe not one of the
best but if the PL had a few more Kevin Friends I think
refereeing would be in a better state. Best of luck to him in
his new role, from what I have heard is he a very nice and
approachable guy which I'm sure will lend itself well to a
management job.
