footballing nations (for want of a better term) as their
referees aren't professional? I've never noticed it before

I watched Harvey 3 years ago on an EL qualifier (Aris - Molde).
Tbh I was impressed by his management of the game and his
presence. IIRC, despite the 3-0 first leg result, it was a
difficult match but Harvey did really well. I saw a future Elite
that day....

That's interesting edy, I must admit that I would say that
management and presence are the two things I see him struggle
with in the domestic league. He seems to have an issue with
making a connection with players. In all fairness however, I
have probably only seen full games of his 5-10 times as the
league here isn't well televised. I believe bmb saw him in a
friendly not too long ago and held similar views. I would be of
the opinion that Hennessy and Doyle are our two strongest
referees. Doyle was perhaps a little unlucky not to get a chance
in the EL GS at any point. Hopefully either Hennessy or Harvey
will be able to follow in the footsteps of Alan Kelly, at the
moment though I am not sure if either are on a path to do so.

It is possibly one of the reasons but imo it's also common
sense. These are the guys that are travelling abroad themselves
for games, they know what they need from the RLO when they
travel, what pressures they themselves are under at that time
and therefore understand better than anyone else what the
difference between a good or bad RLO is.

I had a rather scathing view overall! One of my very rare
negative posts about a performance!!

Decision making was reasonable considering his shocking
positioning and serious lack of fitness. Barely moved more than
10 yards outside of the centre circle at any given time. I'm
not one for body shaming because I think it is cruel however he
is no shape physically to be a top flight referee. There are
some big people who are still fit - he is not one of them! He
needs to see a nutritionist urgently and start attending a gym
to get himself in shape. His shirt was so tight over the bulge
above his waistline it looked ready to tear apart and his shorts
rode up on the inside of his legs the way they do on overweight
people with chubby thighs - I say this from the 1st hand
experience of being overweight and having chubby thighs
myself... I'd estimate he covered no more than 2km across the
whole game, most refs cover between 10 & 14. He didn't
run/sprint at any point, when he did move it was a slow painful
jog. When Hungary scored our goal, he was only just leaving the
centre circle! He was so far behind play the players were in a
different time zone to him. Zero rapport with players and his
man management was appalling! There was something about the way
he spoke with players, of both teams, that just wasn't right. I
can't quite describe it but it was clear the players had no
respect for him and openly didn't like him at all. The plus
point was that he was equally as poor for both teams. Luckily
for him neither team played that well and were not bothered
about the game so behaved themselves. Not sure he would have
been capable of dealing with any serious flash points - he'd
never had made it over to them if they were more than 10 feet
from the centre circle for starters!! It's credit to 22 players
on the pitch behaving that there were no issues. No big calls to
make thankfully, he was so far behind he needed binoculars!
That is as nice as I can be!

If you look at Hungary - the last 3 RLOs used have been Berke
Balázs, Karakó Ferenc & Farkas Ádám. All 3 are current FIFA
refs.

If you look at Hungary - the last 3 RLOs used have been Berke
Balázs, Karakó Ferenc & Farkas Ádám. All 3 are current FIFA
refs.

want from a RLO themselves so are well suited to the role.

Moen's first UEFA game in I think almost 3 years from a quick
look on transfermarket. I have seen comments in the past on Law
5 along the lines of suggesting he was only kept on the list by
Norway to make a point in some way, not sure what accuracy there
is to that but I think nice to see him get a game again in any
case. From EURO2016 to conference league qualifiers is quite a
change, he is unlucky he didn't hang on in the elite as few
years longer as it now seems nobody is demented!!

It's a fairly recent thing that the details of the RLOs have
been published so not that surprising. I'd always tend to know
who the Hungarian ones were either through contacts in Hungary
or from the media packs from the MLSZ & I know some of the
Balkans/Eastern/Central European refs, outside of Hungary, who
act as RLO as well as are serving FIFA refs. Now they are
published more often than not it's easier to build up a picture
of how common it is to fulfil both roles.
