Appointments are out for all matches apart from the Copenhagen
vs Sevilla game where Stuart Atwell is VAR and Chris Kavanagh as
AVAR, can I correctly assume Mr Pawson will get his UCL debut?
Glenn Nyberg gets his debut and I think Maurizio Mariani gets
       his as well

       1. Won't be an English ref as they are in Man City group. Could
be a Scottish ref as they sometimes work with english referees.
They can also work with other referees.
       2. Craig Pawson has already had his UCL debut in Monaco vs
       Dortmund in 2018

Makkelie was a lock for the Bayern game.
Lahoz and his match are now on the Wednesday rather than the
       Tuesday.
Scharer with an important observer in Plzen. He seemed to do
well in the couldron of Celtic Park in the first cluster of
       games.
Interesting that Irrati is demoted to AVAR after the shambles
last time out, although how he keeps getting appointments is a
       mystery.

The AVAR on Tuesday is VAR on Wednesday (and vice versa).
Peljto seems to be last minute replacement (Collum?)
Manchester City with another Italian. Napoli another Spaniard.
       Bad management?

Important observers for Mariani and Nyberg on CL debuts.
Italian refereeing is still massively under cooked in the elite
ranks, is Mariani of the desired quality for success?

As discussed, is it correct that referees aren't normally
appointed to a game in the same group as a team from their
country? I have a feeling that might be the case, aside from
instances near the end of a group stage where for instance the
team in question has already won the group/been knocked out and
so the other game doesn't impact on them.
If that's the case, it's perhaps a bit of a surprise the same is
       not applied to VARs.

I am continually amused by the amount of vituperation that poor
old Massimiliano Irrati comes in for here. Every time I watch a
game on Italian TV and Irrati happens to be serving as the video
assistant referee, the commentators make a point of saying that
he is universally regarded as the best VARista in the world.
Given the appointments that he does indeed keep receiving, could
it be a case of everybody being out of step except this forum?

He was VAR in the world cup final remember. I think by Italian
refereeing standards he is the best. Hernandez Hernandez is
regarded as the best VARista in the world in Spain. But he has
been pretty incompetent in UEFA games. Personally Tomasz
Kwiatkowski seems to be the best.
