       M DEAN - Newcastle v Wolves

I don't think it was the card sharks finest hour to say the
least. The red had question marks on it, although Cann did flag
for it also but Dean had his hand in his back pocket in a flash.
The elbow on Ayoze was terrible and should have been sanctioned
with a red and a penalty. Understandably Benitez was less than
complimentary in his post match remarks.

The Yedlin red card was nailed on, he was through with a clear
run to goal with very little chance of the covering defender
       getting across in time.
I don't think the elbow on Perez was in any way intentional, but
he has swung an arm and caught him so I would certainly
understand a penalty and red card.

I agreed with the red card that was shown - there was one angle
where I think you could see there was very little chance of the
       defender getting across.
At first, the Newcastle penalty appeal looked innocuous enough
and the co-commentator was convinced there was nothing in it
even after seeing multiple penalties. With the benefit of
replays, I would see definitely a penalty and quite possibly a
red card. I think VAR would have intervened in that one.

No problem with the red card awarded. I can cope (to an extent)
with incorrect decisions like the elbow (admittedly a judgement
call which needed replay to be sure) as it wasn’t hugely obvious
       live.
The worst thing for me is that he refused to stop the game for
the head injury to Perez. Ensuring player safety and well-being
is absolutely paramount for a referee, particularly around head
injuries, and I think it was absolutely appalling that he
wouldn’t stop the game and even when the ball went dead was
incredibly reluctant to go and assess the situation.

Mark Clattenburg is of the opinion that Dean got the big calls
right and IMHO I felt so too. This business about high elbows is
generally confusing - players naturally jumping for the ball do
have their hands and elbows up high and inevitably someone will
get clattered. Provided there is no intent I guess it is play on
as the laws are written but it is potentially dangerous but what
is the answer? You cannot penalise someone based on outcome
unless you go down the rugby union route and that would be open
to all sorts of problems regarding interpretation. Top marks to
the two guests in the Sky studio for their balanced comments.

Until players stop pretending they are hurt when they are not, I
have not the slightest sympathy. An occupational hazard of the
       boys crying wolf.

Agree, and seemingly Mike Dean said afterwards that he thought
the ball had hit him in the face rather than elbow, so therefore
presumably assumed he was faking it.

Seemingly Dermot Galalgehr agrees with you - he said it was a
high quality performance with all big decisions correct. :)

Some might have gleaned from some of my posts that I’m not a fan
, I do however believe in giving credit where it’s due.
