Time keeping ...... yet again.

On Sunday we had a perfect example of the complete indifference
of our referees to add on and then play to the right amount of
time.
We had our top referee taking charge of our top team in a vital
match to determine the Premier League winners.
A minimum of FOUR minutes was indicated. There was no play at
all in the first minute and a half of the added time whilst the
Man City goalkeeper was being treated for an injury which might
or might not have been genuine. He added a mere 25 seconds at
the end of the four minutes terminating the game at least a full
minute short. Now Villa probably wouldn't have scored in that
minute - indeed they may well not have managed to extricate the
ball from that corner of the field where it spent most of the
added time. That is not the point, they should have had the
opportunity for them and for Liverpool.
This was just a highly visible example of something that happens
all of the time throughout the Leagues. It's almost as if the
referee wants to get of the pitch as soon as he can. They've
shown they can't/won't do it properly - take the job away from
them.

Totally agree with you.
Its not been mentioned because it mattered not to Villa in the
context of the game.
Its a stain on the game the lack of competence that they cant
keep proper time, and in this case it was even worse as it all
happenned in a very short period..
Very much time of timekeepers

Well Chris Kavanagh actually indicated and played NIL added
minutes in the second half despite 3 goal celebrations, numerous
subs etc for Norwich v Spurs. Not that I was complaining as I
left after the 5th went in, but Son could, even with a couple of
extra minutes it could have been enough for him to win the
Golden Boot outright!

Not long was added at Anfield either despite wolves players
going down with cramp, so salah could have won it outright

Indeed. These are out top referees who are unable to do the most
basic of things right. Disgraceful.

Indeed. These are out top referees who are unable to do the most
basic of things right. Disgraceful.

Its pretty standard when one team is winning comfortably for
very little if any added time to be added.

Agree entirely with the sentiment and the solution is simple if
only IFAB had the wit to apply "stopped clock" when the ball
isn't in play.
However, not really surprised that you chose this example when
there was a much more blatant example in Madrid at the beginning
of the month, as reported in the Spanish press -

It's been clear for years this needs to be resolved, one way or
the other.
I think either keep the games as 90 minutes and have an
independent timekeeper stop the clock for certain incidents like
they do in rugby (maybe goals, substitutions, injuries, VAR
stoppages, timewasting, etc) or change to say 60 minute games
where the clock is stopped whenever the ball isn't in play. I
think that either would be more transparent and get the ball in
play more than it is now.

The challenge with football is that the ball goes out much more
than it does in the likes of rugby. Much of the time lost is
through throw-ins and goal kicks, and if the rugby model was
followed they wouldn't see the stop clocked. I went to a top
class rugby game at the weekend for the first time in ages and
it was obvious how infrequently play was stopped compared to
football. Also interesting was that the stopping of the stadium
clock seemed to be a bit random, on some replacements it kept
going but on others it was stopped. I have no idea who controls
that in rugby I have to confess.
I don't disagree that something needs to be done, but I don't
think it is quite as easy as is being made out. Also, for the
case in question I am 100% sure that the prospect of a pitch
invasion was on Michael Oliver's mind and he wanted to get his
team to safety. If the home team and their stadium security
can't protect match officials and opposition players I certainly
am not going to blame the officials for manufacturing an end to
the game where they have a chance to get to safety. After all,
had he not it could have been Michael Oliver, Stuart Burt or
Simon Bennett who took a strike in the face instead of the Aston
Villa keeper.

In rugby the referee controls when clock is stopped (by voice
and often gesture) simply saying 'time off/time on/time back on'
as required. The timekeeper will give the referee 'warnings'
usually at 5 mins to go, 2 mins to go and time up. The stadium
clock, should reflect this.
