I won't comment on the other confederations but at least this
time meritocracy exists on the UEFA selection.
Both Taylor and Oliver deserved the call based on their
performances the last 18 months. And I am pleased to see that 2
English referees are possible on a WC.
Makkelie, Orsato, Turpin and Vincic were totally expected.
Marciniak lost Euro due to health issues but he has made quite a
comeback. So his selection is justified.
Well Frappart being there is not a surprise. Both Ceferin and
Rosetti have a special interest in her. Perhaps she is there as
reserve?
Kovacs is present for 2 reasons: A reward for his performances
but also due to Hategan's health issues.
Lahoz is not a surprise. A referee with CL final, previous Euro,
WC should be there. Meritocracy wins.
Finally Siebert. He wouldn't have been my choice. But he comes
from Germany so he must be there. Zwayer/Aytekin were simply not
good enough for Qatar.

Kavanagh hasn’t had the best season performance wise on VAR in
the premier league either.

He has been excellent in Europe as VAR. No controversies at all.

I disagree - he is there for one reason and one reason only -
his performances. He was already ahead of Ovi with the likes of
Roberto Rossetti, Alex Deaconu and Kyros Vassaras prior to Ovi's
heart attack. Compare their performances this season - Ovi has
been a steady referee, reliable, a safe pair of hands and
performed at expected level but nothing exceptional, István on
the other hand has, in all bar one game, which was a poor
showing, been consistently above expected level - masterclass.
It's quite similar to the Atkinson v Clattenburg debates of old,
Atkinson was the steady reliable safe pair of hands & Clatts the
one who put in exceptional performances. Both excellent referees
for different reasons, it's the same with Ovi & István. Rossetti
backs István in the same way Collina backed Clatts.

Regarding my point about the UEFA selection being weaker in 2022
than recent years - compare it to the European roster in 2014:
Felix Byrch, Cuneyt Cakir, Jonas Eriksson, Bjorn Kuipers,
Milorad Mazic, Pedro Proenca, Nicola Rizzoli, Carlos Velascalo
Carballo, Howard Webb
I feel like you could feel confident putting any one of those on
a big game as a safe pair of hands (although I never really
rated Mazic) - I don't see the same strength and depth this time
around, although admittedly we now have VAR to correct any
howlers.

world cup.

With respect I find your postulation about why female officials
have been selected extremely disappointing and disrespectful.
Do you have additional information to back up this scurrilous
assertion or are you just agitating the faeces?

PhiltheRef I think your comments although well worded are way
off the mark.
If referee X is not given a place due to their performances in
European games, including Champions League, then how can any
referee be taken who has NO regular champions league experience?
If it is based purely on WC qualifiers then the standard of the
appointments should be uniform (doing the likes of Holl v Turk
etc etc) so marks can be compared fairly. You would expect any
ref going to WC to have had at least one crunch game, involving
top teams, before selection.
Ms Frappart (havent seen the others) is a very good referee,
building her experience in France, in Europe and in Womens
internationals. To compare her to one of the Spanish refs who
missed out or even the Serb, to me, is churlish.
Give her the games so she can be measured against everybody
else.

I am pleased that both Oliver and Taylor are going and very well
done to them both. But a World Cup in winter in Qatar, with such
a dubious record on human rights and begging certain questions
about receiving the Finals....well I may summon up some interest
for it when it starts but at the moment I feel little
anticipation for what has become a political rather than a
football event. The FIFA bigwigs can indulge in their rather
grubby machinations but, as for me, I can't really be that
bothered.

I had planned on ignoring it altogether for those very reasons
but I will watch any games with Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor,
Danny Makkelie & István obviously. My only excitement for the
whole tournament is that István is going to referee at a world
cup. My home nation and my adopted nation are both boycotting
it.

I won’t make a crass comment on your post but RCG comment below
mine sums up my position. To be clear, I have NO problem with
female referees in mens football, and Ms frappart is an
excellent referee and has had an excellent season in Ligue1.
However, this is mens football ELITE competition in world
football and you would expect the best referees from across the
world to be chosen, not someone to tick diversity boxes.
When she has reached uefa elite level and is receiving regular
appointments in the key end of season matches (not group stage
contests) and when she is on a par and most importantly, treated
as an equal with her male colleagues then I will judge her based
on her performances. I don’t blame her it’s fifa and uefa who
are doing this
