Huddersfield vs Luton

Found this quite amusing. James Mainwaring I think it is runs
off before the final whistle to avoid the pitch invasion.
Peter Bankes waited paitently for him to sprint onto the pitch
to blow the final whistle

I have never seen anything like it before, but its a good idea
although it doesn't look good. Didn't watch the game( was
watching arsenal) but heard about a penalty claim, anyone who
watched able to clarify?

Personal safety must overrule if it looks good or not but it is
PGMOL and EFL so who knows 😉
I didn't watch the game, unfortunately I watched the arsenal
game so can't comment

I seem to recall that this used to be common practice on the
final day of the season before clubs made more efforts to keep
people off the pitch. The relative lack of cameras in the olden
days probably meant that most people didn't notice. Square leg
umpires at one day cricket finals were also pretty smart on the
getaway at the end of matches.

Wonder what there referee would have done if the player had
taken the throw quickly while the linesman was running away

In the days before comms the ref would make some sort of agreed
gesture and the AR would get a head start. I do remember seeing
an AR passing the referee on the pitch having misread the
gesture!

I recall being told the referee would try and time the whistle
when the far side AR was as close to the centre line as possible
so they had a shorter distance to sprint!
We used to have a family stand watch for it when bmb jr was
little, the kids used to find it as entertaining as anything
else on the last game of the season (we had little else to cheer
in those days!) as they'd shout 'the linos on the pitch
shuffling towards the centre circle' and start a 3-2-1 countdown
and then cheer their sprint to safety!

Stopped play and told them he hadn't indicated for the game to
restart and to play to the whistle - not that they'd have heard
it, he was almost to the tunnel before he blew for full time!

It happened to me!!
2nd May 1992, Colchester United .v. Barrow. It was a title
decider - Colchester would regain their League status by winning
the Conference if they won.
I was far side at the old Layer Road and Graham Poll (yes, that
one!) told me he would give me a signal so I could get a head
start on the 7,000+ celebrating Colchester fans. As the final
whistle drew near, with Colchester 2-0 up the crowd got closer
and closer to the touchline. A three-foot wall was not going to
hold them back.
A goal-kick was awarded and it felt like time was up (no stadium
game clock, or time added on boards in those days). I looked at
Graham, he looked at me and when the ball was in the air he gave
the agreed signal.
The only thing is, he let me run a good forty yards and then
stop dead - thinking I had misread his signal. Then, with a
mischievous grin, he blew for time.
We laughed about it later, much later!!

I certainly recall that Graham Poll was the referee at
Colchester that day as I remember seeing the action from that
game some years later.
I was about twenty miles up the road at Ipswich that afternoon
seeing Paul Vanes and his team make a quick dash to the tunnel.
Although the exit at Portman Road is in the corner which makes
it rather more difficult for the AR on the far side.
