West Ham .v. Manchester City (Antony Taylor)

I am struggling to understand why Antony Taylor needed VAR to
tell him that the challenge, towards the end of yesterday's
game, was a foul (and a penalty kick).
It looked a pretty clear foul to many and adds further evidence
to the theory that VAR is almost preventing some of our top
referees from making the "big calls". If this is the case, then
they are going to struggle in games where they do not have the
       benefit of VAR (e.g. Championship play-off semi-finals).
At least Michael Oliver had the courage of his convictions to
make big calls in the Everton .v. Brentford game later in the
       afternoon.

I'd guess that from the one look and position he had on the
field, he didn't see the contact........

Maybe he didn't have a view from which he was 100% certain that
he had clear vision of the Challenge?
Irrespective of who the Referee might be surely it's better to
be entirely sure rather than "guess" / "follow your instinct" if
       such support is available?

Now now Phil we know that only applies to certain refs, others
such as Anthony Taylor, Chris Kavanagh, Stuart Attwell, although
less of late granted, it's gross incompetence and they should
       have seen it regardless... [emoji9]

Cracking game and well played West Ham.
In the last min of the City v Liverpool game a City player
ballooned a golden chance to win over the bar; in the 1st leg v
Real Madrid a City player spurned a golden chance to pass to
Foden when City were 2 up and shoot himself when 3-0 might have
put the tie beyond doubt; yesterday a City player wasted a
golden chance to virtually seal the PL title by missing a
       penalty.
The common factor in all this is Riyad Mahrez. He really does
owe City and the fans something next week, if indeed Pep chooses
       to play him
As an aside I have to ask this - with De Bruyne in the team and
on fire at present why was Mahrez taking the penalty in any
       case?

Not really sure why this is being asked on here but maybe
because De Bruyne has a bad penalty record

Looked to me as though he had the best view of it in the ground.
However, that apart, I though he was OK.

He did have a great view and it is his judgement (among other
attributes) that got him to Premier League and to Elite UEFA
ranking in the first place. My guess is that - without VAR - he
would have given a penalty kick in the same circumstances 100
       times out of 100.
If VAR is making our very best referees doubt their own
judgement then that cannot be a good thing. We have been told
that referees cannot hide behind VAR and should referee the game
as normal, that might not now always be the case.

There is a noticeable difference in how it is used by FIFA/UEFA,
where our referees look confident and have no issues with it,
and in the PL where they seem to at times be very unsure for
want of a better word. Why is there such a big difference
between how they use it in international games and how they use
it in the PL is the key question for me?
