On issues like this you can’t win as a referee. You remain
stoney faced and impersonal - you’re labelled robotic with no
feeling or understanding of the game. You smile and have an
occasional laugh with players/managers - you’re trying to be the
centre of attention/the players mates and biased.
Personally I think it’s best just to act naturally and if David
Coote found something funny and had a little laugh…..well the
sun will still come up tomorrow!

I agree that Craig Pawson and his team were excellent in what is
still a very high profile occasion. In fact, I don't readily
recall a better performance from Craig.
Perhaps Milner was slightly fortunate not to be cautioned as
soon as he came on as a sub. but then I tend to think that he,
rather like Fernandes, Fernandinho and a few others, is a player
who's had no shortage of cards but could easily have received
far more.
Well done to the officials and the players in what was an
absorbing game despite the goalless scoreline.

A fairly straightforward match to referee but concentration
needed to be maintained for 120 minutes plus penalty shoot out.
Pawson was excellent offering exactly the right sort of
officiating for such a match. I imagine he will be delighted
that this great honour of refereeing the FA Cup Final went so
very well for him and his team and the FA will be extremely
pleased also.

I was at Wembley and although I watch the referee I barely
noticed him. The game flowed and although he didn’t have any
really big calls to make he can only deal with what’s in front
of him. Chatting to others I was sitting with (the pathetic
allocation meant I couldn’t be with the people I normally sit
with) and declaring I’m a referee normally means I get earache
as they moan about decisions or need Law explained to them. Not
a word yesterday.
