Orsato Real v Man City

Just want to say I think his performance was an absolute
disgrace [edited out - you may question competence but not
integrity, bmb]

Not an overly convincing display, missed some obvious yellows
(e.g. Casemiro) which could've been needed for game management
purposes and never quite knew what was coming next. Thought the
worst thing they did was the timekeeping (as often in UEFA
games) especially Extra Time. 3 minutes was never enough and he
still blew early - really not acceptable.

Remember that UEFA appointed Orsato despite him not really being
fit (you could see that, too). Against the background that he
was reffing a CL semi on one leg, I'd say he even did pretty
well to be honest. You quite right though, Orsato was
satisfactory at best, and in particular, not sanctioning
Casemiro's early tackle was, frankly, a disgraceful decision. At
France '98, he'd have been on the first plane home for not
giving a red card there, let alone just a caution! UEFA won't
really care about these 'details' though, and as the game was
delivered without controversy, they will be (very) happy. :/

I agree that Orsato was probably nowhere near on his best form
due to a prolonged spell out from injury. It really then is very
poor management by UEFA to appoint him to a second leg of a
Champions League semi final and if they are very happy with that
performance then there needs to be a radical overhaul of of
expected standards.
To think there is a excellent referee like Cakir standing by
idly; it really is an indictment of European policy on managing
senior referees.

When you say "controversy free" is this only because the Man
City owner has not been seen publicly rebuking the referee,
following him into changing room and running to his UEFA 'mates'
who excuse his behaviour? If that is the case then all
managers/owners/chief execs will make an orderly queue to have
the 2 pence worth (or €200 million...)
As much as I like Cakir, he would have been in similar position
mentally (rather than physically) having not refereed that often
in last few months.

I didn’t think he had a bad game overall, missed a clear caution
for Casemiro after 9 minutes which then ended up with a minor
mass confrontation, resulting in 2 (correct) highly avoidable
yellow cards. The lack of a caution for Casemiro later in the
half was also correct as he played a good advantage, although
may have been a nice easy persistent infringement yellow.
Penalty decision clearly correct.

He was dreadful, just because you play advantage doesn't mean
you cant be booked unless the rules have changed in the last 2
weeks.

Advantage
If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a
caution/sending-off would have been issued had play been
stopped, this caution/sending-off must be issued when the ball
is next out of play. However, if the offence was denying the
opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity the player is
cautioned for unsporting behaviour; if the offence was
interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is
not cautioned.
