To be honest whoever team ref was they were on a loser last
night.
The hype surrounding the game started back in Feb with storm
Eunice. We wanted to call it off the day before as we were under
a red weather warning, sky TV wanted it to go ahead whatever the
risk to people and property & the FL wouldn't allow us to call
it off because of a weather warning, even after the local police
had informed them that they had issued a stay at home message
and wanted various roads closed, including the main road into
Bournemouth that Dean Court sits beside. We all know the farce
of what happened on the day, both clubs requesting the game was
called off, Sky wanting it on and the FL still saying it was
just a weather warning (despite the 50-70mph winds locally) and
zero communication to the fans. Poole harbour recorded wind
speeds of 120mph at one point during the height of the storm
(the sensors recording that one are located 500m from bmb
towers) even with that the FL wouldn't make the decision... I
was told about 2pm that the game was off, from a very trusted
source, so kept telling people not to travel if they hadn't
already, but the official line was no decision had been made.
The FL finally granted the game being off at 4.15pm and it was
then communicated officially. AFCB were heavily criticised over
it, including by the FL who very quickly retracted their
criticism when it was pointed out to them that they had refused
the requests made the day before and had delayed the decision on
the day despite having the report from the safety commission
stating the ground was unsafe due to storm damage for several
hours. Forest said they wanted the game played the following
day, there was never any chance of that due to the damage plus
the continued high winds from storm Eunice. They and their fans
have been in denial about storm Eunice ever since despite the
safety commission report and photographic evidence of damage! I
can understand their anger, the game should have been called off
the day before or at least in the morning when it was evident
the storm was starting up and no longer just a weather warning
and had it not been live on sky it would have been. People were
put at risk with the travelling despite police up and down the
country begging people not to do so unless it was essential.
Add into that Forest's phenomenal rise up the league between
then & now resulting in it being a promotion decider it was a
grudge match of the highest order. Add in an AFCB cult hero
playing for the opposition just weeks before his AFCB
testimonial game, 2 other ex players - Surridge with a point to
prove and Grabben, who didn't play in the end. It was going to
be fast, it was going to be tetchy, it was going to be 2 teams
going hell for leather and was going to be virtually
unrefereeable before it even kicked off.

Forest have been amazing since Cooper took over. I'd like to see
a Forest v Luton final & either I'd be pleased if they won.
I would have been sat diagonally opposite you in that 1st game.
1-0 defeat to Villa. They flew Mark Clattenburg back from
holiday in Spain to referee it. There were so many changes at
the club over the summer with stuff that had to be brought up to
PL standard and it was chaos. The PL seriously doubted things
were going to go right on the day in terms of protocols etc.
even silly tings like team ref arriving at the ground in 1 car
instead of all arriving separately in their own cars seemed to
be cause for concern so they asked Mark to do the game as he'd
not be fazed by the complete chaos! 1st PL game in my 21 lady
years of watching & I had to leave 5 mins early to get out of
the carpark ahead of the traffic and over to the hotel to get
him back to Gatwick for his flight back to Spain!

I do just want to mention Steve Cook. A lot of us were surprised
by his aggression during the game, he is a cult hero here, we
know he loves the club and his 2 sons are staunch AFCB fans, it
just wasn't like him. He announced after the game that his
father had a cardiac arrest before the game & needed to be
brought back to life. Incredible strength that he played.

But its not unrefereeable then

I still think it was virtually unrefereeable even for excellent
referees. Maybe an exceptional referee would have done better
but there are very few exceptional referees about.

Agree, you are on a hiding to nothing with games like that.
Kill the game to stop it escalating and you get accused of
ruining the game, let it flow and you get accused of losing
control. I thought Attwell got it just about right, not a
perfect performance, but he gave the game a chance and certainly
didn't lose control.
