i say this as a Ranger supporter. John Beaton had no influence
on the result. For me he had a good game, which meant it was
under control at all times. When he needed to he brought the
game back with FKs and then when he was happy with the tempo let
it go again. This was his best performance in an Old Firm match.

Some of the highest resolution clips I can remember seeing here
😂
Are there any you want to discuss specifically? Some good pick
outs for discussion, but the majority look to have been dealt
with perfectly.
I thought the team did well, and some of the teamwork was
excellent.

Neither side can have any complaints about the refereeing team
yesterday in my opinion, though as always is the way up here,
some on both sides will microscopically analyse every decision
and decide he has favoured the other. Welcome to Glasgow :)

Thought it was an excellent game which John Beaton contributed
to, I'd say he's maybe overtaken Madden and Collum this season.
He let minimal contact go and the players reacted to being given
a bit of leeway and didn't take the mickey. When he had to
intervene he did it promptly and calmly and it never once
threatened to blow out of control. Very good.

Beaton reffed it very well IMO.
> In terms of KMIs:
47' - I guess nobody cares very much here (ball to hand, close
distance), but in UEFA that is a clear penalty (+YC) to be
given, enlarging body surface to block a shot. With VAR in
operation, if SFA follow the UEFA line, that would be a clear
intervention in 2023, just to warn everyone north of the border
that VAR would necessarily reduce attention on the officials.
50' - Despite not hitting above the shin, some arguments for a
red card here (flying tackle, 'not in control', high intensity
on planted foot) but I'd go with Beaton, yellow was fine.
75' - Sky pundits rubbished the idea of a penalty and rightly so
for British refereeing, never a penalty. In UEFA, the incident
is vaguely similar to the TURITA one at the start of the EURO
which Rosetti assessed as a missed intervention, but there are
enough arguments there to support play on.
87' - Never DOGSO (too wide, players back), perfect yellow card
decision.
> In terms of other talking points:
- I guess this match was of a lower difficulty than other Old
Firm derbies in the past. That being said, in the second half,
the game's difficulty increased as it went on and always played
very passionately by both sets of players. Beaton did well, and
any general praise from the media etc. is well-deserved.
- Maybe he is slightly betrayed by his physical condition and
general impression of a 'passive' guy, but I always considered
Beaton a referee with a very good style of refereeing. To be
honest, perhaps even UEFA Elite level(!). But, we know for a
fact that he will never reach that come what may. I'd like to
see UEFA give him more chances though!
- After problems in the past with the men at Thomson's and then
Collum's side, there were two (very) important mistakes by the
assistant referees in this match (55', then 90'). It seems
somehow that their 'linesmen' can't keep pace with their FIFA
referees, whom's level I would generally consider to be very
sound (better than 'our' FIFA squad in England I think, in terms
of strength in depth!).

UEFA has got the guidance wrong. Never a penalty for 'enlarging
body' and never a penalty on 75 minutes either. UEFA need to
grow a pair of wings. P.S. let's hope Scotland don't follow the
UEFA guidance otherwise they're in for massive problems!

Just to follow up on your points.
Agreed with 47'. Hard to spot in real time, but you wouldn't be
surprised to see that given by VAR in UEFA competition.
50' is definitely a caution. Contact is on the foot/toes which
given UEFA guidance (which the SFA follow) instructions are
almost always a caution in such situations (see also caution
against Motherwell played in Scottish Cup tie against Hibs)
With respect to the two offside decisions, I'd suggest that the
first call may have been deliberately held as the AR was
unsighted as to the attacking/defensive touch and so held his
flag awaiting confirmation. If anything other than a goal kick
is the result, then I'd have expected the flag to go up. Or it
was just wrongly held, but I'd be prepared to give the doubt
given as we don't know (and all of us who have ever ran the line
can sympathise with that potential position!)
The second one is tight, and one of the calls that VAR will
assist with come December.
