Who do we think will get these matches ? Any thoughts ……

Now we’re back to normal after Covid, they would usually select
the top ranking SG2 refs. In my opinion, I would go for Tim
Robinson, Josh Smith, David Webb and Geoff Eltringham. As a
lively outsider, possibly Leigh Doughty. All based on the recent
appointments in the Championship.

A couple of observations re appointments:
I thought SG2 refs were used last season in the championship
play offs not due to covid, but due to the increased need for
SG1 refs to be VAR. I could be wrong of course!
Secondly, I’d be very surprised to see Sunderland fans anywhere
near the League One play off appointments!

When the Championship Play Offs were taking place last season,
there was a full programme of Premier League matches that needed
their heavy hitters appointed to, this was as a result of Covid
pushing matches further back in the season. Again I stand
corrected by any of our esteemed correspondents.
Mackem Ref, I completely forgot about Webb and Eltringham and
their affinity/proximity to Sunderland! My bad!
I will therefore change my final four to Robinson, Smith,
Doughty and Linington. Possibility of Matt Donohue being
involved too.

Yes i had forgotten re webb and eltringham re sunderland and
will amend my four to include Stroud and
Doughty in their places.

Webb and Eltringham could do Wyc v MKD with no issues - no way
would a SG2 official think "oh I will stitch up Team X, just in
case Sunderland get through" - madness to think otherwise

It’s less about the officials, more about the media/social media
backlash if they made a genuine error that turned out to be
match changing. It just seems common sense to me to avoid this
situation entirely!
