Not the luck, or particularly bad luck in the case of Consett,
of the draw. These fixtures were allocated by a sub-committee of
the FA's Alliance and League Committees.
Although to be fair whilst Consett to Histon is a long way it is
not the most onerous of journeys, being mainly dual carriageway
/ motorway for the bulk of it.

I think its the premise that Histon is in the north and
Skelmersdale are in the south that gets me.
Just the 221 miles between Consett and Histon, albeit "only" a 4
hour drive
The other 2 - 50 miles closer, 3h30 mins

........ and, of course, motorways are always a breeze on bank
holiday weekends.

There were due to be 16 such fixtures (a couple of which must
surely have been accessible to all, including Sheffield FC) but
a large number of historical vacancies has meant many reprieves
and reduced the requirement for play-offs to 6.
The FA have always shown a predilection for reprieves throughout
the pyramid, whereas I personally would prefer an extra
promotion. I'd favour the up and coming successful clubs over,
in many cases the dead wood clinging on.
Very interesting. I take it that the ten reprieves went to the
ten teams with the best points per game coefficient, with the
ten Step 5 runners-up being automatically promoted on a similar
basis, leaving the clubs with the lowest ppg score to be juggled
into the remaining ties. Newhaven and Saffron Walden seem to
have been the lucky sides with relatively short trips. Still,
for fans it can make for a fun day out.

Is the William Davis down to referee at Winchester the young
gentleman from Manchester whom I saw have an excellent game at
Penistone a couple of years ago? I have been hoping to see him
again, but the opportunity has not arisen. Sadly Winchester is
not a possibility.

Judging by previous appointments in the North, I'm certain it's
the same person.

Interesting observation is that the two referees for the
conference south semi finals are referees who have primarily
officiated in the conference North this season and vice versa
for the officials who are in charge of the conference North semi
finals.
