Seems to happen quite often in his games. Not sure why, maybe
over-leniency and wanting to let the game flow when some
preventative intervention is needed. Had similar troubles in
Arsenal v City earlier in the season.

Definitely not. I am between small and important areas for
improvement. More likely the second one with a mark below 8.0.

Letting the game flow is fine but Everton’s theatrics and time
wasting needed to be dealt with. The laughing in the stands when
Alisson’s mocking of Pickford’s unpunished timewasting said a
lot.
A robust approach from a bottom-three team is to be expected but
the referee shouldn’t indulge them.

Stuart did very well in what I would describe as difficult
circumstances.
Let’s be honest, we have all had ( at our own respective level)
games where you need in the back of your head ( and in other
parts). I thought that overall he had a pretty decent game. I
got the impression that he wanted it to flow but he was forced
to pull it back rather more than he would have liked for obvious
reasons.
There is no doubt in my mind that he his refereeing better than
ever and the appointment was a nod to his undoubted development.
I think Richarlison was lucky to stay on, but we can all nit
pick about aspects of the game that we might have dealt with
differently ( from the comfort of our armchair in a fixture
that 99.999% of us would never get).
I enjoyed the game, it was entertaining and “spicy “ making it
compulsive viewing for the neutral.

Implication a little close to an accusation…!
Was the contact above negligible and definitely to the face? VAR
won’t get involved if it’s only a cautionable offence…
I was always told in several sports (Rugby Union namely amongst
them) the moment you stick a finger near the eye area of an
opponent - then you’re gone.
And that’s even after open palming someone else in the face
It somewhat goes without saying that football isn’t rugby, and
rugby isn’t football.
I haven’t seen the incident, and you haven’t described it, but
contact has to be non-negligible.
Admittedly, ‘negligible’ force (Law 12) isn’t a particularly
useful term and different FAs provide guidance in different
ways. But a light slap in the face is unlikely to be a red card
offence, which I’d suggest is correct for the game, and would
also be the same in rugby.

Anthony Taylor set a very low bar when he sent off Martial last
season against Spurs.

I think it may have been 2 seasons ago but bruntyboy is right. I
was surprised how much support that decision got considering the
provocation and theatrics by his opponent which went without
sanction. Has the law been redefined since then? If not, then
Mane should have suffered the same fate I would have thought.

That was very soft. Also remember its a Merseyside derby. Many
players in another game could have been sent off. Although i
like Attwell as a referee I don't think he is strong enough to
referee games which might explode as shown by Arsenal vs Man
City, he looses control

Reading some of the comments on here and on another forum, I'm
not surprised I found it difficult to express a view on Stuart
Attwell's performance. "Never in control" on the one hand but
"did very well" on the other.
Clattenburg praises Attwell and agrees with the decisions of no
penalty to Everton and not sending off Mane. Mind you, MC had
his own problems in a Merseyside derby some years ago I recall!
edy reckons it was a below expected level performance with areas
for improvement.
Some referees have a natural 'presence' which probably helps
game control in certain situations, and that doesn't necessarily
mean physical stature. I'm not fully convinced yet that Stuart
has that 'presence' but I'm sure others feel differently. In
Europe, Cakir has it despite not being a tall or imposing figure
physically.

You describe the challenges well. Fans often get frustrated
when teams setup as a low block, or when they entertain antics
such as Everton did. Referees suffer the ire of pundits and
fans for 'not getting a grip' of the match, which whilst
appealing, is not a particularly insightful complaint.
The problem with the criticism that often comes their way is
that an overly officious approach turns the game into more of a
farce, and not less so. Cautions for goalkeepers in the first
half lead to red cards in the second, and match control is lost,
not gained.
Perhaps there's a discussion on that subject to be had (just as
there is for dissent etc.) But that's a strategic discussion
for the governance of the game, not for the officiating tactics
of a single match.
From a fans' perspective, I totally get the frustration. From a
referee's perspective, the balance is far more nuanced. A
referee happy carding players like Richarlison for his
playacting and Pickford for his slowness will not keep
officiating these games in the future.
After all, if a team wants to play anti-football (we've seen how
difficult it is to deal with Simeone sides), no amount of
refereeing can cajole them to play football. Perhaps, that's
part of the game.
For the big decisions, no penalty very much correct for me.
Mane caution correct, and Richarlison just the right side of
excessive force to justice yellow too.

I thought Attwell did OK. It wasn't a poor performance in my
view but neither was it extremely good. I think a credible case
can be made that he got the key incidents just about correct, at
any rate there is room for debate in them.
This match showed to me why Attwell is not and never will be an
Elite referee and I think this match was pushing him to the very
limit of his abilities. He doesn't appear to have much natural
authority about his officiating and that gives rise to the
accusation that he isn't in control of proceedings. I don't
think he lost control here but I think it was running close to
the edge at times because of this perceived lack of authority.
