Darren England - Middlesbrough vs Huddersfield Town

27/28th minute Darren awarded Huddersfield an IDFK in the
Middlesbrough penalty area following a back pass offence by
Middlesbrough. The ball was going over the keeper and heading
for the goal, before the keeper then handled the ball.
Does anyone know, in the laws of the game, what sanction, if
any, should be given for this? Darren did not caution the keeper
but the ball was heading for the goal so I feel it was at least
a caution but can’t find anything in the laws of the game.
Other than that a good first half hour for Darren and his team
so far.

The goalkeeper cannot be booked or sent off for handling the
ball in his own penalty area I believe that’s why he wasn’t
carded
Having said that it was a certain goal if he haven’t handled it
and the goalkeeper has benefitted from it either the ball would
have bounced into the net or the Huddersfield player would have
slotted it in

Its a technical offence resulting in an indirect free kick and
as stated above the goalkeeper cannot be sanctioned for handling
inside the eighteen yard area to which he is defending, unless
he handles after taking a free kick prior to another player
touching the ball, however having said that in that scenario the
offence wouldnt be hand ball.

As Dave has pointed out there can be no sanction for a
goalkeeper handling a backpass in their own area, other than the
IDFK. The only time a goalkeeper can be cautioned or sent off
for handling the ball in their own area would be a second touch
at a restart which denies a promising attack or an OGSO.
